Why Do Prisoners Sentenced To Death Try to Commit Suicide?

Question

I've heard that some prisoners tries to commit suicide although they're sentenced to death and are going to die anyway. It's not only today it happens when the death row waiting time are long. I've heard it has happen when the waiting time is short too and that some do it regardless of execution methods. Sometimes committing suicide is more painful than if a professional execute you, so what's the point to do it yourself and wants to die, if someone else can do it for you? Did you ever have an event in your life that you were extremely anxious for? maybe an exam, or an interview, or just a meeting or date. Imagine the suspense and anxiety you felt, how much you dreaded that moment, and amplify that by millions, that's how it feels waiting for death. You suffer mentally until it's done, so why not cut that suffering short?
Alternatively, a last "fuck you, you ain't killing me" to the authorities makes sense too, a way of showing you won't let them do you in, and that you'll do it yourself before letting anyone else end your life instead

I guess it probably has something to do with going out on their own terms. Part of the punishment is "the long walk to the gallows", as it were. It's not like they have anything exciting to do up until their death so rather than waste away for years in a concrete box, they kill themselves to end their suffering.

Think about it, if you had to sit there for months knowing that you’re going to be killed, and that there’s nothing you can do to save yourself, your fate is sealed, wouldn’t it cause you unbearable anxiety? I know I wouldn’t be able to tolerate that kind of anxiety for months.

they probably can't handle the stress, the isolation, the beatings and probably getting ass raped in the showers by other bigger and meaner prisoners on death row anymore. if they know they innocent and they had been wrongfully convicted then they shouldn't give up all hope and insist on getting a retrial, it sucks but those kind of things do happen sometimes. but if they know they guilty and did what they had been convicted for, then they on their own, they lucky if they can somehow get another trial and get a life sentence, but it won't always happen

Because executions can only be carried out if you are informed about it. So with a lethal injection for example, 'the nurse has to ask you are aware that I am going to lethally inject you, do you understand?' or something similar like that. Can you imagine what its like being strapped down on a table when they tell you something like that? They do everything for you to have full consciousness of whats gonna happen next. In the Soviet union executions were carried without the victim knowing anything about it. They were told they were being interrogated and then while walking through a long hallway shot to death in the back of their head. If I was to be executed, I would prefer the Soviet method as opposed to the American way of doing it. Also most executions throughout history were carried out with the victim having a bag over their head. Informing the victim of the execution they are going to be executed while they are being executed is a modern practice.

Nobody wanna die from the electric chair or through injection... even thou i don't agree with the system doing that who is them to kill someone... if anything give them life or 3 counts of life w. e sentence and let them die on they own terms either way they either be killed by someone in jail or just die of old age

It's a form of protest. When someone tries to take control over your life by killing you legally, you take it back and exert the supreme authority over yourself by the act of suicide. Then there is nothing they can do about it, since you are already dead, any authority they had over you is gone.

Most people sentenced to death end up on Death Row for 20 years before it happens - and that's a long time to wait for death with no possibility of release. There's nothing to look forward to...

Maybe its the stress of being on death row. I think they should speed up executions and not have people suffer the overbearing idea of dying for months. Well except for rapists. I think they shoukd be tortured

Power and control over the authorities and victims, time it takes for the execution to take place, it takes decades in some countries and perhaps to spare them a worse execution. Depends on which countries you are on about.

I guess sometimes it takes time for the authorities to confirm the date of execution or something like sometimes it takes 1 year sometimes 20 maybe even more no one knows. Maybe the way he/she killed themselves is easier and faster.
