Should Prisoners be allowed suicide? Why isn't it allowed?

Regardless if assisted suicide is legal or not, some people commits suicide. As long the family and friends don't know about it, it's difficult to prevent a suicide for a commoner and it's technically legal for them to do so. But when people sits in prison, they gets watched more frequently and are more often on suicide watch than free people.

I'm wondering on why it's not allowed and if they should be allowed it. Some prisoners wants to die regardless which therapy options they gets like euthanasia patients. I'm honestly sitting on the fence like on if assisted suicide should be legal or not, and if the family/friends can force someone to live or not. #Suicide #Prison

I think from a legal perspective, it's difficult to make that sort of call without upholding proper ways if holding not just the other inmates, but the institution accountable for said suicides. I mean, should prison be a place designed to unravel people's sanity to the point of depression or suicide? Or should prison be a place of deliberately healing and reform. Who's to check on whether the conditions if the institution drive inmates to suicide or make allowances for gang murders to be "shown" as suicide legally and without lawful repercussions. I'm on the fence about this, because I think it's a lot more serious than "prisioners deserve to suffer or they don't" I think we have to ask ourselves as a society what we think the role and purpose of a prison is, and whether a suicide would be seen as a failure of society or a personal liberation. Also, how the heck would insurance cover this? For all parties.

On paper, prison is about reformation and taking long extensive time righting your wrongs. It’s not EXACTLY supposed to be about “punishment”. The purpose of prison is to keep them and others safe from causing more harm. But like I said, ON PAPER. In reality prison is just a pit hole for bad people. Society doesn’t actually care if they change their ways or not. In fact, no one really cares about prisoners at all (unless you’re immediate family). So they’re forced to eat garbage and rot alone. Yes, prisoners should be allowed suicide. No one cares about them. A lot of them tend to lose their sanity. And there isn’t much space in prisons anyway. People don’t want them to commit suicide but they aren’t actually taking action to prevent them from wanting to kill them selves in the first place. The public wants prisoners to suffer. But to me, killing yourself sounds like mission accomplished.

It is sad that this is what it comes down to. I do currently have a loved one that has been down for 11 years. He has had to fight his way the entire time. He has made some stupid choices in life but he is still a human and not a number that they say he is. I don't think that enough people know the dirty details that happen behind the walls of a prison. And it is almost an out of sight out of mind thing. But at the end of the day no matter what the crime these are still humans.

They should be forced to fill out there sentence. Because imagine it was allowed, every morning you come in and find out 14 more inmates offed themselves in the night and now you gotta clean it up, deal with the bodies, prepare the body, spend a lot more money to deal with it all. Than you have to deal with gangs staging a mass suicide or a small group making a guy look like he killed himself. All too much of a headache

I think it should be allowed, but what keeps an inmate from taking the cyanide pill and shoving it in a guard’s mouth? The administration of the suicide would have to be strictly controlled, but what differentiates that from a death sentence?

If suicides in prisons were allowed, they would only allow them everyday items that's already allowed in prisons and that's difficult to kill other people with. Some items are easier to kill yourself with than other people who doesn't want to die.

Guards would resist and it's difficult to kill three guards at a time. They also have weapons or other things they can defend themselves with. It's much easier for a prisoner to hang himself from a bed sheet than choking a prison guard with it if suicide were legal.

Our prison system is down right despicable, it's punitive, lacking in rehabilitation, there's for profit prisons, almost all convictions are plead bargains never seeing a trial by peers, manipulation of juries through the selection process, the reinstatement of the death penalty, solitary confinement which leads to brain damage, etc...

So should suicide be permitted? I think yes, but I think we should fix the problem first.

Yes it is. My husband tells me it is a storage unit for men. His first prison didn't have any programing to help with rehabilitation at all, which dumbfounded me. He was transferred he got his degree but in 2 sections because he was doing culinary arts and half way through the teacher handed out books to the students and the co on his unit sent him to segregation for having contraband, 90 days later he was out and had to wait 6 months to get back in his program, he finished. But then he was transferred to a different prison where he couldn't put it to use. He watched witnessed an inmate commit suicide the day before mothers day and he was told he can't talk to anyone at all about it not even the social worker or therapist. It is just wrong what inmates have to keep quiet about or there will be "consequences".

I think the roots are deeper, prison sentences are seen as a punishment so they tend to be harsher then death in some cases. Whats the point? Make someone suffer for everything he caused? Whats the benefit of that?

I think we should change the mentality around convictions and prison sentences in general, it shouldn't be the primary goal to punish for a crime but the primary goal to make sure the individual doesn't do it again.

Well it would save society some money to take care of them the rest of their life. I think it's more like part of the punishment, as suicide would let them off too easy. It's funny to not that some Nazi war criminals responsible for thousands of deaths got off more lightly than someone who only kills one. It most have been a lot different in the 50's than today.

Well making suicide illegal for commoners is pointless because if they kill themselves, there's nothing you can do to them so it's pointless. We do have mental hospitals and stuff that help prevent suicide and have suicide watch. But we can't devote resources to watch everyone to make sure they don't commit suicide. Prisons can do that because they have less people and guards designated on keeping watch on the inmates so it's a lot easier to keep watch on them.

When someone is in the custody of the state (incarcerated), they are considered a ward of the state. That means the people running the prison are responsible for what happens to them. If they just allowed people to commit suicide, imagine the backlash. People would not be okay with that.

That’s why I think it would have to be a deal where the inmate is put in a room by himself, the cyanide pill is dispensed to him through a wall with a cup of water, he takes it, dies and his body is removed. No one else in the room, it is his decision. If he changes his mind, there’s a separate disposal chute for him to put the pill.

Give them time to think about what they did and possibly want to change their ways. It’s possible to go from jail to Heaven if they are truthful to God and pray for forgiveness. If they refuse to swallow their stubborn pride, let them have punishment on Earth before getting more in Hell. And if you don’t believe in that kind of stuff, just see suicide as being put out of their misery. All the better for them, which we don’t want.

It shouldn't be allowed. Especially if the person is on prison sentence and not death penalty. Furthermore, if you live in a corrupt society then it is a problem. Most murders in prison by police and other inmates might be write off as suicides. So those who didn't commit suicide will also be claimed as one without any inquiry as police may say it is allowed or assisted.

I think euthanasia should be allowed in any case of suffering, not just physical but also mental and emotional torment.
Though, I might be biased about the subject, because I'm a virgin in my late 30s, never dated, never had a kiss, what can I say, I don't really have much will to live.

Cause once your in prison they want you to pay for your crimes with your days off life not life in general but the days and nights of your life, if you kill yourself in jail then you've just wasted sooo much tax money they had on you now they gotta pay to get you out and buried, they also would rather have you kill yourself before you go to jail cause then it's not there problem you died before you even became there problem.

Wether it's legal or not, anyone that wants to commit suicide will just do it anyway but if there were a painless medical procedure then at least they can die properly, I'm not just talking about prisoners, all people...

There has to be people who actually care enough to help them first. For most co's it is a paycheck and good insurance that is the reason they go to work not to help and reform inmates.
