What Did Disabled Slaves Do? Did Slaves Work In Chains?

I'm wondering on:
1. How disabled slaves worked and what they did. For example blind slaves. What happen to them?
2. Were slaves always unrestrained when they worked, or did they work in chains? If they were shackled, how did they work?

I'm talking of general speaking, not a specific country.

Most disabled slaves wete killed if they were worthless than their output. I. e. a blind slave coukd still do certain types of work so the cost of housing and feeding could still be less than how much value he was earning his master. However, a paralyzed slave would cost more than they were worth so they woukd be killed. Most slaves worked and lived free as the threat of death was enough to keep them in the fields or what ever their trade was. In more abysmal conditions you would be more likely to see chains and shackles as a slave might think that the penalty of death for trying and failing to escape would be better than laboring in a mine that already has a high death rate for the slaves who remain.

The country is important. Here in the US, slaves were expensive as they were imported in. Naturally, disabled slaves would not be selected for import. The ones that existed would have been born here. They would have found a task they could do, or sold them to someone else that had a task they could do. And chains were not really a factor here. Slaves lived and worked unchained.

Infanticide has always been a thing so I imagine that was their fate and they didn't live past their teenage years unless it was an invisible disability like OCD or something.

Also as far as I'm aware chains we're a thing in transport not for working. Most slaves were kept because they'd seen people who ran be killed brutally and they had every reason to fear that happening

Stalin killed more people than what Hitler did, but the Nazi ideology is technically worse than the communist one. Nazis wanted to get rid of Jews, gypsies, disabled, homosexuals etc. They called it racial superiority, but they wanted to get rid of economical advantaged people and others they thought were a threat to their country or culture.

Communists wanted a classless society where everyone were equal, but failed. Stalin wanted power, but not every communists were like that. Stalin didn't follow the ideology correctly either and the standard fascism or dictatorship ideology would fit him better.

The gallows in the Med. Sea had slaves chained to the benches for the entire voyage. If the ship sank, they all drowned. A lot of them sank.

Most all slaves in the US would be free to roam within limits after their work was done. They wouldn't be able to do work when chained, that was only sometimes used when they were transported or being punished. Many were free to come and go from their home as long as they always came back and did their work. They would socialize with slaves on other farms regularly and run errands independently.

Some of my ancestors inherited a girl and her grandparents in early 1700s Delaware. The girl slept in the same house as the family and the same bed as their daughter. The grandparents had their own cabin. The only material difference in treatment between the daughter and the slave girl was the the slave girl did not have to learn to read and write. They did chores together. One day the slave girl (17 at the time) said she wanted to get married and her owners told her to fetch the boy and his owners. They had a meeting in the house, her owners transferred her to the boy's owners and the story ends.

Notice how there is no definite answer. This is because there weren't many disabled slaves back then. And not that they cared or even knew about. If you had two legs and arms, you're good. Severe mental retardation was very rare. Like down syndrome or cerebal palsy. Not until the slaves were "free" were we subject to man made diseases. This is not by accident. This depends upon when and where. In Rome it's not like all slaves were always chained up. Some were actually sought out for their medical abilities to be a physician or for their combat prowess to be a Gladiator. While being a Gladiator sounds like a huge punishment, one must take into account that Gladiators were professional athletes and combat in the arena did not always end in a fatality and they were given access to the best physicians available. Galen was one of such physicians at one point in his life.

So you want specific answew on general topic. Pleas be more specific on time period at least. Region is also important beause aztec slaves and mongol slaves were treated diferently. Also etnicitu of the slaves irish slaves were cheaper so they were killed if criple unlike black witch were more expensive and could be traded for some money or gods is cripled.

I’m really not that well-versed in worldwide slavery, more just American slavery. But I’m pretty sure if you were of no use to the owner you were probably just killed, and probably not sold to start with if they came in with said disability. These people were treated like animals, I don’t think there was a whole lot of pity to speak of.

Most weren't chained to what I'm aware. It would be quite hard to work with chain when in the fields or in the house.

Just thinking logically. If I was a slave owner (from way back in the day) that would mean I’m probably racist as well... I probably wouldn’t have much regard for a slave’s life depending on how much they are worth. So... hypothetically if I was a racist white male slave owner dealing with disabled people who work for me, I’d probably rape the women because I’m a pig and I want future slaves. Then I’d kill the woman. And I’d kill the men instantly, who are disabled in this hypothetical scenario.

The thing is, i am rational and I am not a racist slave owner. I’m just a logical black woman looking at this question through the lense of someone else. I’m just taking a wild guess that disabled people were killed off, especially if it was a dude. And again, maybe the women would be raped first.

I don’t support that. I’m just acknowledging a possible reality.
