I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of things that are very loosely translated - You even get it in different countries that speak the same language (in my case english) lots of words I use mean something totally different in US

My understanding is that "chai tea" is black tea with other spices added. So sure "chai" may mean tea, but the style called "chai" isn't just plain tea, otherwise itd just be black tea.

  actually it depends on state in west Bengal black tea is called liquor tea and in my state it is called kaali chai.. but tea means milk tea with or without ginger or clove or cardmom.. some call ginger tea as adrak wali chai like wise laung wali and eliachi wali chai..
