What would you choose to protect yourself during an outbreak? The outbreak in question is your typical, slow moving style undead that possesses a lethal bite. Remember, humans may also be a threat.

My personal ranged weapon - Semi-auto AK47 My personal melee weapon - Spear
I would select the AK due to a high durability and common rounds. It can be used to reliably take out anything in close or medium range. The gun is easy to take apart and clean as well.
I would select the spear for multiple reasons. It does not require much energy to use. A spear is typically light and easy to carry. A spear does not require getting too close to the undead, as it has a solid reach distance. A spear can also stab through a fence if need be.

depends on the scenario. if i have to choose for survival in my country, the only viable ranged weapon is a crossbow, cause you won't find any ammo for any weapon (yeah some exists here but that's super rare and well hidden/locked away) and for crossbows you can craft ammo yourself in a pinch.
if i were to go with america, i'd take a standard manufacturing DP-12 because it gives you a huge magazine capacity to sprach and pray close range or go midrange with slugs. i really don't see a need for a sniper as zombies are not tactical targets that you really must attack from afar anyway.
in both cases i'd probably go witha DIY lawnmower blade machete cause the steel is low maintenance and really durable or with a zombie tools Mack Daddy-O but i assume i don't get to order this fancy thing of amazon before the zombies start eating us. i think a spear is a bad choice, cause with a spear you'll be at a total loss if you find yourself in a medium size horde. yeah you'll easily pick off single ones but i hear they tend to gang up on you quickly and in that case you're way better of with something more agile and short.
Ranged weapon, the bow. No noise easy to replace arrows, even if you have to make them yourself. Close combat the longsword I've been training longsword for nearly 25 years. I am very comfortable with the weapon and very very lethal.
A tank or a hay combine. Either would be effective in culling the heard and keeping you safe.
Light sword like a samurai sword. For close combat.
Mid range assault style rifle. Like you said, The ak47 is a good choice. Works when wet. better to find something with a common type round as a gun needs ammo. So most likely like a.223. I think guns would be easy to find. Stock piles of ammo would not. Probably head to first gun outfitter and get a loading kit and refills for my gun as well as cleaning kit.
I don't know anything about guns so for a long ranged weapon, I'd probably choose one with lots of range. I'd also want a metal baseball bat because they're easy to use as weapons and deal a lot of blunt force that could damage a zombie's brain, disabling it.
I would choose a standard bow and a Bowie knife. A bow is silent, fairly lightweight, and can be just as quick as a gun in adept hands without attracting attention because of noise. Great as a silent, distance killer. Bowie knives are sturdy, reliable, and also quiet. Plus, it can also be used to fashion ammunition for my bow, for which there would be plenty of raw material readily available.
Force everyone to come with me to a ship. Head over seas. Infiltrate a government army base. Launch nukes Head underground into a surivial Bunker until the fallout ends and its safe to surface once again
A Hemmer with a cattle grill. 50 caliber gun access through the sunroof. I would carry a over and under shotgun an AK-47 22 Katanas with a shit load of ordnance, grenades hand guns, 30 all loaded. C4 To clear road blocks and boxes of power bars water and Guru
Under meta zombie apocalypse rules I wouldn’t use guns due to lack of ammo and because they are loud.
I like the idea of a spear provided that putting a hole through a rotted skull is enough to disable a zombie as opposed to a complete decapitation, plus I think you’d agree that the utility of a long stick is high.
If usually in my good position I would be set with 2 good Machete knives, 2 good hand guns loaded with several good rounds of ammo, and a sword or 2... worthy of bringing out the fight in me.
But since you had brought up the concept of 1 ranged weapon & 1 close combat weapon. I would say a Modern Day Sword and a really cool hand gun, loaded with several good rounds to it's name
Assuming that the movies are correct, and a head, or spinal shot ends them, then a Red Jacket, ZK-22 stock on a Ruger 10-22, with a Red-dot laser sight, and a LOT of magazines!! Also a Katana blade, and maybe a shorter, Kodachi for close encounters!!
AK is a really good choice but guns are never good gonna ruin out of bullets at some point. Mine would katana of course or a triple shot tacitle bow arrow
As a mature adult my choices are: a canoe and a pack of cigarettes. Intelligent people will now have no questions left. Survival has a lot more chances of success when we REFUSE to fight. (Why did I even type a reply, here?) :D
For distance a fully suppressed AirForce Texan SS, Demolition Ranch Combo in.45 cal with bullet mould. Closer in A glaive Its a pole arm that gives you a stabbing and cutting 18" blade on a 7 foot pole.
Shotgun for range (slugs are pretty accurate up to 100 yards, plus you get all types of ammo) and some type of katana for melee. Uchigatana would be smaller and faster but a nodachi would have more range and power.
