Why do some people call themselves potatoes?

I think somewhere along the line when I wasn’t paying full attention to the internet, “potato” became the go-to humorous inanimate object to say. “What’s up with the shitty video quality? Did you film this with a potato?” I’ve heard that a million times, and other similar stuff. Or people maybe post a poll on here, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen something like “A) Yes; B) No; C) I’m a potato” as voting options. So I guess my answer is I don’t really get it any more than you, lmao, but I feel like it’s just a dumb thing people say, and no one is original enough to come up with something else.

Unless they are saying "Couch Potato", I have no idea. A couch potato is someone who just hangs out at home just watching TV and not doing much. But just "Potato"? I have never heard of that.
