919 opinions shared on Other topic. I am not a very good chess player myself. That being said, learning the basic moves is very easy to do.
Learning to build and adapt your own strategies while keeping your opponents moves in mind is tough. It requires intense concentration.
Having someone to play with who is proficient at the game and who is willing to help you learn would, I believe, help a lot.
I haven't had the luxury of finding someone like that to play with, or finding anyone to play with at all.
I've found that playing against computers is no help at all.
There might be some programs out there that help you learn, but I have yet to find them.
When I was a young boy, I would watch my dad play chess with his dad for hours.
Unfortunately, my dad and granddad both passed away when I was young, so I never got the chance to learn from them.
Since your crush plays, he might be thrilled to know that you're interested in chess, and could help you learn.
There's no shame in being a newbie at anything.
Have fun!00 Reply

+1 yPlaying it is easy; playing well is hard. If he's part of an organized league, he might have an Elo rating, which is a rough approximation of how good he is. Learning that might tell you if it's worth learning to play if it's just to flirt with him. If it's to play and actually enjoy it, though, it's probably worth learning for that.
Just remember that the more seriously he takes it, the less likely he is to be interested in the strip variant.03 Reply- +1 y
His rating is 1500 and as far as I know he’s not part of a league he just plays for fun.
- +1 y
Then go nuts! Much fun to be had.
- +1 y
I’m still thinking about it
+1 yNot hard at all for someone with an analytical mind like you

I’m not looking to be pro or anything just good enough to have a chance of winning against him.
- +1 y
Go for it!
- +1 y
I watched him play a while back and I was really impressed even though he lost
- +1 y
That’s an amazing idea. Proud of you girl 😊.
- +1 y
But first I need to learn how to speak Spanish, Italian and Russian
- +1 y
LOL
Nah. Just learn chess for now. And maybe a little Spanish. - +1 y
Im definitely gonna have to learn Spanish at some point
- +1 y
Definitely

It would be for school though not him

If you are serious about language, maybe try you tube channels, if apps aren't enough.
I've subscribed to a few, but I'm too lazy to learn 😅 - +1 y
@Tstrbrainer I was joking about the languages
- +1 y
Okay 😅
its not to hard to learn just hard to be good at it

I’m only trying to get to the same rating as him so I could possibly win a game against him

+1 yIt's really hard, at least it was for me. You have to be thinking of the outcomes several moves ahead and I definitely wasn't smart enough to play at a high level. You might as well try it out though. It's not too tough to get the basics down, I think.
01 Reply- +1 y
I’m not sure how long he’s been playing but his rating is 1500 which he says is pretty bad. I watched him play a while back and even though he lost he survived for a decent amount of time.

1 yHow the pieces move is very easy. However, if you can imagine a battle/ war, then there is endless theory and ways to learn how to attack/ defend. That is the hard and time consuming part!

+1 yNot real hard, I learned when I was about 14. Mostly, it's a game of tactics. If you wanna start out easy, try getting a copy of Smess, The Ninny's Chess. You only have 3 different pieces to worry about and all the moves you CAN make are already laid out on the board. You just have to decide which moves to make and how far to go each time.

I decided not to learn how to play
- +1 y
That's up to you.
- +1 y
After thinking about it, I realized that it was a stupid idea
- +1 y
I can't see how. If nothing else, it can help you make life decisions in the long run.
- +1 y
It was a stupid idea because I was only thinking about learning how to play because of him
- +1 y
Oh! Not worth it, eh?
- +1 y
Not at all
+1 ynot hard , there are some major moves one can learn to use against any novice and win, but a expert will know them, but just have to be calculated and think several moves ahead every move, always anticipate what they will do or the move you leave them to do. Most beat themselves as they just dont look

12.8K opinions shared on Other topic. It is not really hard to learn. You just have to learn the rules. I think it is hard to become really good at it however.
I played for a while when I was in college. A friend taught me how to play in less than an hour.03 Reply- +1 y
I’m not trying to get really good at it just good enough to have the same rating as him and to have a chance to win against him
- +1 y
First I have to find out which website he uses
Learning the movements rules and such is very easy. Playing good is the hard part, which takes a lot of time and practice to just be "good enough".
05 Reply- +1 y
He has a chess rating of 1500 so I’m only looking to be good enough to have a chance to win against him
- +1 y
How hard or easy it is to learn chess depends largely on whether you have a "chess brain." If you do you could easily become much better than your boyfriend and humiliate him regularly.
- +1 y
@EnglishEuropean we’re both cubers so if he can play chess then I could learn
- +1 y
Maybe it's just me but I feel like chess is a doddle compared to cubing.
- +1 y
@EnglishEuropean I’ve noticed that there are decent amount of cubers who play chess
+1 yNot hard at all, but it does take time to get good. Download a chess app on your phone and work up through the levels.
01 Reply- +1 y
I’m gonna use the website that he uses
+1 yIt's not that hard to learn but it's hard to get really really good. I play a lot online too and I get soooo angry when I lose like too angry bad for my health
19 Reply- +1 y
I’m not looking to get really good just good enough to where I would have the chance to beat him.
- +1 y
Is this chess. com? if he's 1500 that's pretty bad but if you're just learning you might be in the same ballpark.
- +1 y
I’m not sure which website he uses
- +1 y
Maybe you can have him teach you. It's an easy way to spend time with someone you like. Have them teach you.
- +1 y
I wish I could have him teach me but unfortunately I can’t cuz he lives in another state unless there was a way for him to teach me over video chat
- +1 y
That sounds fun. Learn over video chat yeah. If you can get a third friend to help you out that might work as well.
- +1 y
I think the website he uses is lichess. org
- +1 y
wow it's a smooth website layout i like it
- +1 y
I watched him play a while back and if I remember correctly that was the website he was using

+1 yThe rules are relatively simple, and so: easy to learn.
But without talent or interest, playing is no fun for each side.04 Reply- +1 y
I’m interested in being able to interact with him online through playing chess
- +1 y
What I meant: myself, I'm really bad with chess. So my interactive playing partners feel very annoyed with the boring (and short) chess 'contest' :D
Further - chess is a very silent and somewhat introverted game; what would you talk about?
Unless you turn out to be on a similar chess level to where he is... to consider a different game could open you two a better alternative?
- +1 y
Me and him have another common hobby
- +1 y
Obviously I wouldn’t except to talk to him during the game but afterwards.
It is very easy to learn, it only take an hour or two but it is difficult to be a good player unless you are naturally talented.
03 Reply- +1 y
I’m only looking to have the same rating as him nothing higher
- +1 y
Go to https://www.chess.com/play/computer and play a few dozen games against the computer. It is free and it is a good way to learn.
- +1 y
I’m gonna use the website he uses once I find out what it is

+1 yLearning the moves is easy. Playing well is incredibly difficult for the average mind.
07 Reply- +1 y
I’m only looking to get the same rating as him
- +1 y
That means you have to join a chess club and get officially rated. Are you that interested in the game?
- +1 y
Since he’s gonna be moving to another country for college, I’m interested in interacting with him online aside from YouTube
- +1 y
Ok then, I'd suggest you look up a local chess club near you and become a member. If you live in a large enough city, they may even have a location of their own that's open for play every day.
- +1 y
I’m gonna use the website that he uses
- +1 y
Ok, but you'll get better instruction in person. Main thing is, have fun !
- +1 y
I wanna learn from the website he uses because that’s the one I’ll be using to play him. I’m only trying to get a rating 1500 which is his rating.
1 yLearning how the individual pieces move is the easy part.

There must be some online sites or applications which is widely used by players like him.
Or try to know the website through his co players or friends - +1 y
By the way, I too would like to know the names of good online chess platforms where we can play with different people across the globe
- +1 y
I can get the website from him he just needs to either stream on YouTube or post on social media
- +1 y
I’ll let you know what website he uses once I find out

Thanks a lot. I need to start chess from the scratch.
