I learnt it in few minutes. By oldest brother taught me how to and I saw him play chess with my other brother I had a good grasping power as a kid. I was a quick learner. I started winning within few days.

Learned pretty young from my Dad sorry don't really remember how long that was. I'm ELO rating 1600 been stuck there for awhile
The specific rules? Not long; the basic mechanics aren't complicated, and I'm pretty good at learning games. But to play it well? That's a different story.

It doesn't take much time at all. To get good at it and recognize all sorts of opening moves and all the other stuff that (most) people don't bother with... that's more involved and will take practice. But there are plenty of chessbots out there that could help. But generic learning of the rules? My dad taught me when I was like 3, and we'd just play once in a while.
I never play anymore. I've been stuck at about 1500 ELO forever. I don't need to practice to stay 1500 I guess, but I did play for an hour per day every day for an entire year while I was a Senior in High School.
The basics just a few games. The mechanics and so forth. But after that, well, I'm still learning.
I honestly don't even remember when I learned to play chess, I just know that I can.
You can learn the basics, how the pieces move, in a few minutes. How to play a basic game takes about an hour, and to play really well takes years.
Its not that much easy to be master but you can learn it in a few month but it going to take years to win everyone :) if you want to be magnus carlsen or something hahah
