Yes, some people forget that without basic things like toilets and refrigerators life would be horrible.

Maybe the calculator, a lot of people think it’s frivolous since you can do it by hand but the calculator paved the way for other inventions where scientists can calculate complex data humans cannot do since it takes too long, involves too many variables, dabbles in unknown quantities, or is prone to errors when imperfect humans do them with pen and paper or takes too long when humans do them, or it is a waste of electronics for lazy people but calculators prevent lawsuits too.

My instinct says "the wheel" (and by extension, pardon the pun, the axle).
The wheel lead to roads, roads got sealed (asphalt, cobble stones). Now, you can travel without getting dirty.
