Where are my fellow bird watchers?

I love to watch birds! My favorite is the cardinal. What is your favorite bird?

I live on acreage in the western Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California. It's oak grassland with some gray pines. We have lots of different birds. We put out feeders full of sunflower seeds, as well as hummingbird feeders. We also have blackberry bushes climbing up a section of the deer fence that surrounds our small orchard. Birds like to raid our fruit trees, too. But a lot of the birds are ground foragers and find lots of bugs and seeds in our yard.

I wouldn't call myself a bird watcher because I'm not adept in recognizing all of their calls or even identifying all of them. But I do love them.

I don't think I can pick a favorite. Black-Headed Grosbeaks and Robins are fun. So are woodpeckers, towhees, quail, yellow finches and hummingbirds. Turkeys are great during mating season.

Lots. They love our yard. Only a few weeks ago it was fun watching them with their babies following behind.

I never ever see it but my God do I hear it in the spring when I go camping before it gets too hot and that’s the chuck-wills-widow.

It’s a member of the nightjar family. A cousin to the whip-poor-will. When the sun goes down they start and a chorus of them can be deafening. They do their call ALL NIGHT LONG.

Looks like our European Nightjar , remember the churring sound all night on exercise with the British Army on the Surrey / Hampshire heathland. We were also gladly assisting local fire brigades stop heath fires in summer 1990 , hope we saved many nightjars , as well as other wildlife.

Great picture! That's the kind of picture I wanted to use for this question. I have a pet bird who is noisy, but he sleeps in as late as the test of the teenagers in my house.

I love birds too, even the noisy ones. In my city there's mostly pigeons but occasionally I'll see humming birds. There's a park/ nature sanctuary near me that has Peacocks roaming around which are my favorite to see.

@IAMNathanael Well I'll pass on the noisy, squawky ones, thank you very much; but yes, I generally really like them. Esp humming birds, peacocks, ducks. Though songbirds have an extra special place in my heart.
P. S. I think 'squawk' is the hardest word to spell. I got it right this time but I've looked it up so many times. Even more than spelling it, I don't like the sound of it. They don't call 'em a 'murder of crows' for nothing.

My most favorite bird is the Indigo bunting. Beautiful blue bird. I think it's Cate when male birds do their girlfriend dance cute.

I used to take care of a property is a Big Ranch property yeah there's all types of birds up there the best for the two owls two different types of valves one was a barn owl and I'm not sure what the other type was big white face but the witness fans for at least 6 ft on each one and every night they would get into their trees and then we talked back and forth I thought that was cool lot of hummingbirds a lot of red-tailed hawk but that job ended so I don't get to see too many birds except for the McDonald Birds LOL

Yeah the Angry Birds our trip you can hold a feeder in your hand and they will come up to the feeder and start feeding

Yes! Here is one... I get most excited when I see a bald eagle, because they are not real prevalent where I live. While going out hiking, I commonly see about 30 species. One I don't see often is the Western Tanager and I love seeing those.

The cardinal that you have on this post, we don't get here. However I did see a male female pair in Southern Arizona when I went there 2 years ago. However I was on a short walk and my camera was in the car!! LOL...

we had Blue Jays coming on our porch but that was for a

@AmandaYVR If you want to do something really illegal, get a small fish like a mackerel and wrap fishing line around it so it is really secure. Then cast it out in the direction of the sea gull. When he eats it yo have to give him a lot of line until he really swallows it, otherwise he will just spit it out.
Then you reel him in. Be prepared because they really put up a fight.

Two mornings ago I literally dreamt I was sleeping over in someone's house and their weird alarm clock kept going off. It sounded a bit... irregular. Not mechanical, exactly. And it kept going off. I could not find the 'off' button. When I finally couldn't stand it anymore I woke up and realized... it was this little -. He's out there every morning.

I used to live in salt lake city. Instead of pigeons they have seagulls, which are in fact the state bird.

@exitseven Yes! I just wrote a comment about them on my thread here. Little hellions.
(Although two were building a nest for a while, right outside my window here, and we were super excited. But then guess what happened - squirrels chased them away! It was quite the kerfuffle. In the war of crows and squirrels, the almighty squirrel reigns victorious. Who knew.
They slept in the nest, just to prove their dominance.
Although three raccoons also slept in the nest two nights! It was like a Larry, Moe, Curly pile of fur. Fascinating. They slept for 14 hrs.

@AmandaYVR When I was in college I remember seeing lots of kids reading the Watership Down book. I had no idea when it was about but I figured if everyone was reading it I figured it would be good so when I bought my textbools for the semester I threw this book on to the pile. When I started reading it I remember thinking "WTF , this book is about friggin rabbits !" It actually was a goodbook.

@exitseven Hahaha. Maybe it was required reading in some class.
I bought the book a couple of years ago and surprisingly I did not like it. I can't quite remember why, but the guy's writing style just did not do it for me. I looove the subject matter though. And was absolutely transfixed by the movie as a child. It was far too graphic and dark for such an age, but it was a different time when children weren't so protected and my parents were quite the opposite I guess you could say.
So I've seen the movie many times and always enjoy it.
The story of how the author came to write it is interesting. I think it might have been the intro in the book. He used to go on long road trips with his two young daughters in the UK and they would say, "Daddy, tell us a story please." He was a natural at concocting narratives on the fly. He made an ongoing novella about the inner world of rabbits, all based on his own army days. He based every rabbit off of a solider or captain he knew. No wonder if they feel so real.

@AmandaYVR Yes, I could see that. My favorite was Blue Bell. Jokes come out one end, hracka from the other. I read this 30 years ago but still remember a lot of it. I figured since you like rabbits you would like this book.

Sometimes movies really are better. I feel the same about The Bridges of Madison County. Meryl Streep only agreed to do the movie if the script was changed significantly. I read the book, and she was right. The original author sounded a bit... arrogant. It was better from the woman's POV.

I love watching Bald Eagles, Blue Heron, and Vultures overhead most days as well as Hummingbirds and California Quail. Pileated Woodpeckers are probably my favorite.
