So dryers really eat socks..

Nah like I see the pair of socks go into the dryer. I take the clothes out, and one sock isn't anywhere

I found my sock!! It was in the washer!

For me it's usually stuck inside a pant leg.
Once I started tieing the socks together when I threw them in the washer they stopped disappearing.

They escape! Haven't you ever seen one sock on the side of the road and wonder how it got there? It's one that managed to escape but got run over by a car!
I never put my socks in the dryer. I just hang them on the line and they're dry by morning. If you put them on the line, it's too high for them to jump off and run away!!

I take a sock census before and after they go into the washer and dryer.

HOWEVER, I also have a backup plan. All 2 or 3 dozen pairs of socks that I have are identical. So, if I lose one or get a hole in one and have to throw it out, I have a few dozen backup socks that I can use.

I got this idea from reliability theory and Henry Ford who said about the Model T:

My wife found one in the fridge one time. I think I was thinking about something and meant to put something else there. I tend to just get 95% white socks that look the same because I have a tendency to misplace one of the two.

Static cling sticks it inside a pant leg, it comes out during a meeting or date from your waistline making you look really stupid.

Sometimes the sock gets caught in the little space between the drum and the chassis of the dryer and can actually get trapped there until it comes out on the other side. When you have to change the belt on the drum you will find it.

The dryer gets too hot for it so it runs out the vent and down the street to find water to cool down

That missing sock will turn up when you put on one of the shirts or pants that were in the dryer with your socks. They tend to find their way inside.

I have severe OCD about MY laundry and I make sure I do it myself. I never get in that position where a sock gets lost on the dryer. If one comes out, I know one went in. And normally, it is because of 1 of 2 reasons.
