Emergency Funds?

Is keeping an emergency fund still a thing? Do you keep one?

I have 2-3months of extra funds

I have 3-6 months of extra funds

I have up to 9 months

A year and more

What emergency funds? I’m in debt…

My parents taught me to save money, and I’ve been doing so ever since. I save a set amount each month, and don’t touch it. Basically, you just put away what ever you can afford. Even the smallest amount can add up over time without you even realising. Once you start doing it, you soon forget your doing it. Then further down the line you have a look at what you’ve saved, you get a nice surprise at what you’ve achieved.
I’ve had some tough months where I’ve had some big bills to pay all at once, but I didn’t have to touch my savings to pay for them.

I did, but then an emergency happened and now I am trying to build it back up.

Absolutely! That's something my parents taught me at an early age: always have at least 3-6 months worth of money (to pay bills, rent, food, emergency expenses, etc) put aside in case I lose my job or something happens.

That and always keep a little cash on me- don't rely on debit and credit cards.

Honestly that's something everyone should try to do- if nothing else, at least a few months of savings.

Six months living expenses is the minimum anyone should have, but being the smartest girl on GAG, and maybe the richest, you knew that... :)

Don't really call it a emergency fund but yes I have money saved up

I never set up an emergency fund, per say. I worked for a company that offered a 401(k) and matched up to 6% of our contribution. So I paid 6% of my gross salary into that and another 5% of my after tax salary into a Roth 401(k) that I could access without tax penalty if necessary. All that money was deducted from my paycheck and deposited into the 401(k) s automatically.

I have to agree with you, everyone should have emergency funds, too many people including myself, do not save funds and you never know when it will be needed, my late grand-dad always kept one and good thing cause he needed to pay someone to help take care of my grandma when she took sick with dementia
