Are you great at giving advice?

I have no idea. My friends tend to single me out for it but I'm not sure if it's because I give good advice or simply because I just tend to listen a lot and generally don't offer very strong opinions (I'm hasty to jump to conclusions).

Mostly I just rely on my personal experiences, especially all the dumb things I did in life. I like to share stories and the personal lessons I got from them and see if they click with other people. They probably won't all the time since they're so personal to me and the situations I faced.

One thing I try to do with people who come to me is to offer a different perspective; it's not necessarily right (I have no idea), just different. Like if my wife comes home complaining to me about a colleague at work who was nasty to her, I might say, "Well, I met her and she seems like someone who is stressed out all the time and she seemed to have a rough childhood. Maybe her hostility comes from how she perceives so many others as her enemy rather than her potential allies. She seems like someone who thinks everyone is out to get her."

You know, something like that. I have no idea if it's correct or not but it tends to make my wife feel better.

One discouraging thing I have to admit on this site (although I distinguish it from my real life) is that sometimes I have offered thoughts to people who said very nice things in response and I thought they'd take that advice to heart. Yet I find them asking almost the exact same question a week later and so maybe I failed, although some of the things I suggest are far easier said than done.

I wouldn't say great. As I think there are other people who can give great advice. Better than I can, but I do think that I give good advice sometimes especially when I've been in the same situation as the asker.
