I think such a statement is more figurative and does not necessarily talk about external rewards when it comes to the harvest or the fruits of our labor. Becoming smarter in our ways also requires effort.

No far from it, work smart not hard. You can work hard all your life and still end up with nothing. If you work smart you get the most out of your work and will most likely get a harvest out of everything even if it is just experience of what works.

No, one of the things that really surprised me was the disconnect between hard work and reward. It is usually the well connected or the suck ups that get the promotions and raises.
