"Cereal is in the cupboard, let me grab that. Milk and orange juice are in the fridge, put those on the table. I wanted an apple too, let me grab one out the fridge drawer. I wanted toast, bread is on top of the fridge, toaster is in the bottom drawer. Bowls and glasses are in the other cupboards, spoon is in that drawer."
Of course, you might not say those exact words, it's all depending on your own individual personality. Obviously, your inner narrative doesn't only apply to walking yourself through tasks. If you think before you speak, you will hear your inner narritive say something in context to the discussion, whether that's what you say out loud or not.
A lapse in executive function can happen when you day dream, your distracted, or your brain just freezes. Most often it happens when your brain is on "auto pilot". This often happens when you're accomplishing a task that you became so proficient at, you don't often give the task conscience thought. Using the breakfeast example, even though you might not be thinking of anything else, you might pour orange juice in your cereal instead of the milk. It doesn't mean you're stupid, again, it's a lapse in executive function. Something just slips your mind.
Now for me? My inner narrative doesn't shut the fuck up. It used to be anxiety related, but not anymore. When completing even the most mundane mindless tasks, I still use that inner narrative to walk myself through directions, almost as if I'm learning the task for the first time. In social situations, I'm a more quiet person, I use that inner narrative to observe and read the room. How often do you guys use it?
