Do you travel "by plane" or "in a plane"?

Is it "he is going to France in a plane" or is it "he is going to France by plane"? Which you choose depends on your local dialect. Other languages of course have other expressions so it'll be interesting to see which one they choose when translating into English.
I went to France in a plane
I went to France by plane
Other e. g I went with a plane
