What things do you collect?
I used to collect baseball cards as a boy and even became all savvy trading cards when I visited the US. I would get a pack at the store in the US for around $0.25 filled with mostly junk cards and collected books on how much they're valued.
But I started collecting a few promising cards like Bo Jackson and traded it and traded it around until I got my grandfather to pitch in and I traded in a Mark McGwire rookie card along with over $100 my grandfather paid for an autographed Mickey Mantle rookie card.
That was my most prized possession as a boy. I kept it in a plastic case and framed it all the time on my shelf. Unfortunately, one of my mother's boyfriends stole it along with my Nintendo and all my games along with our family car. I was so depressed and especially over that card.
I stopped collecting things after that. :-D But I also lived out of a suitcase and left the home and started traveling everywhere from a full scholarship to uni and to living out of hotel-rented apartments and hotel rooms. I think I stopped being materialistic almost completely at that point but I was still hedonistic. I came to love drinking and partying and women.
Actually, that boyfriend married my mother but for the shortest period. Like 3 months later after they married was when he stole our car and all my prized possessions. Then my mother reported the car as stolen and then found it abandoned in Chicago (we were in South Carolina). And I had to show up to divorce court and testify with him absent about the stolen car and things like that.
I never got my Mickey Mantle autographed card back but that was the last time I ever valued my possessions.
I think it's a good thing now in hindsight; made me less materialistic. But I lost maybe something entrepreneurial and interested in investing in appreciating assets along the way. I've become a major saver but a very reluctant investor.
In response to the update, I was a hardcore investor back then. I actually didn't like baseball so much as a sport and didn't feel anything looking at the back of them with all the baseball stats. I just wanted to trade and trade at minor costs to boys who didn't understand the value of their cards. :-D I was looking to profit and profit.
I traded 5 Bo Jackson cards for the Mark McGwire rookie card which wasn't so valuable back then. In my books, it was like $50. But it quickly rose to $400+ just a few years later.
I build them.
Very nice, you're a junior Jay Leno.
When I was a little girl I would collect rocks and seashells from the beach. At one point I would also collect marbels as well
