How much is home heating oil where you live? ?

I just paid $5.35 a gallon. It is almost twice what it was a year ago.

I am amazed that most of the country is using natural gas for heat.

That's not a thing here, in the city it's Natural Gas. In the country, you have large propane tanks that you have to pay propane trucks to come fill up as needed.

In the country you could also burn firewood/coal and have wood burning stoves, lots of people do that too. You can get virtually free wood, so long as you do all the work yourself, forest service does permits to cut down old dead trees in certain area's.

If you figure in the price of labor ($ per hour) to cut fire wood (whatever minimum wage is there), wouldn't it just be cheaper to pay for oil?

@Daniela1982 Doing it yourself doesn't cost anything if you're willing to sacrifice an hour of pleasure (for example, skipping Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy).

When I lived in a cabin on the mountain I used to chop wood. It's just what you did.

@Daniela1982 Its a good exercise program, whip out the chain saw... or axe.

Since I don't know what heating oil is or if they even sell it around here, there is a place though I can take a truck and trailer and for 30 bucks they'll fill it up with old railroad ties from when they get replaced by the trains. Treated wood that they've already cut into the right size for a wood burning stove, because its treated wood and highly compacted one of those can burn all day long or more.

They just want to get rid of them, so it is a single charge to haul away as much as you can per visit.

Of course if oil or heating oil gets too pricy, the exercise program of getting it myself becomes more realistic.

Since I did the railroad tie thing, I have years of it stacked up and won't need wood any time soon.

Those ties are treated with creosote, a preservative that is also a carcinogen, and are not supposed to be burned.

We gave up the oil furnace in 2009 (the last time O'Biden was in office). Now we skip the whole process by just chopping the trees down and burning them to stay warm.

How much wood do you use a season? I used to go through 8 cords a year. I used to cut it a split it all myself. It was a lot of work.

It is a lot of work and it was getting hard to find places to get wood. There was a cemetery near my house and there were plenty of trees on the ground. I used to go at 6AM before anyone showed up and fill my trailer up. The way things are going I really hope I don't have to do it again/

Sometimes my husband and I split wood together (we have a hydraulic splitter mind you) and most of the time we order it split. We live on wooded acreage, so we still have lots of trees if we need them.

My son was diagnosed with asthma so when we moved into our new house many years ago we left the woodstove in the old house. I have never had a fire in the fireplace.

The wood stove is our only hear source now. I keep a decorative bowl nearby with water in it to keep the house from getting too dry.

Yes, I used to keep a cast iron frying pan filled with water on top of the stove to get some humidity in the air.

We don't really use heat in Florida. Technically there is generally a heating coil in an electric AC, but you don't really use it. Some people have fire places for fun... A quick overnight frost that warms up into the 50s by 10 AM doesn't really require anything but the insulation in the house and a blanket.

We live off grid on solar power and two fireplaces so I have no clue. The Biden gasprices are crazy though. Like over 4 bucks a gallon here

That's what you get for driving a supercar. I have to have my 35 gallon tank filled and have to fill a 5 gallon gas can too. This will be he first time I will be spending over a hundred bucks for a tank of gas.

Diesel is about $2.20 a liter at the pump so heating oil is going to be close to $2.00 liter.
