In the past I would of said turn it into the police, but no more.
The reason being is I did find a wallet in a garbage can with over a $1000 in it once, turned it in. The way it works here is, they keep it for three years and if no one has claimed it, it is yours.
The thing is, they aren't required to notify you that no one claimed it. You have to keep checking with them and if no one claims and the person who turned it in, doesn't come back. The police get to keep it, so they have every reason to make you jump through hoops to not only verify if someone claimed it, but after the 3 years to even let you know. They want you to give up.
Now I would just personally try to see it owns it. Like if it is in a wallet, maybe there is ID and an address.
A few months ago in a snow storm, got out of my car at the grocery store and buried under snow was a bunch of 20's, maybe a hundred... like no way to know who that belonged to, they were soaking wet. I donated them to the store in exchange for some food.
A couple of years ago, I saw a book that I thought was a bible in the road... being ran over. I pulled over to go get it and it was a gift card book, full of gift cards with marked amounts on them.
Went through every page, no name, number or any contact info on any of them. It is someone who does wedding planning though cause they had notes on stuff.
No way to know who lost them or how it got in the road. I didn't know gift card books even existed until this damaged and ran over thing.
Forgot one thing, that wallet with the 1000 dollars I did turn in, forgot about it then when I did remember, checked on it and they were very rude... said after the three year time, I only have so long to come collect or it is theirs and I missed the deadline so it is theirs to keep.

When I was in college, I found some girl's mini purse in the library. She was long gone by then, and i had work to do before class. I typed my paper for like 30 minutes, and she never came back. I had time to write a quick note and printed that out as well, and left my number behind. I then went to class and silenced my phone for an hour.
After class, I had a voicemail from campus police and the asshole rent-a-cop told me I was required to meet him at the campus station. This was maybe 10 minutes before class ended. I showed up there with the purse and this POS white knight (he had to be in his late 20s, early 30s; someone young enough to date the student) hounded me, with the assumption I *stole* the purse from her. The girl herself was also b*tching, saying "You held me up and wasted my time!" (Even though she had nowhere else to be that day and wasn't in a rush; she didn't even come back to the library.) I told them I found it in the library, and if I stole it, why would I leave a note with my name and number there. But the prick officer kept asking me follow-up questions, as if I had to prove my innocence.
The 19 year old Karen snatched the purse out of my hand, and the campus officer, with no strong evidence, decided to "let me off with a warning." There was a trash bin literally right there, next to the desk and workstation I found the purse. Next time, that sh*t is going straight in the trash and I'll even shuffle the other trash around inside so it's not even visible from the top.
@MCheetah I wouldn't leave a note either, anyone could technically call and say it was theirs.
@t-8900 Right, and you know he just kept it.
Ofc I'd make it rain on some hoes. They work hard and deserve it

The best guarantee I have for making the right thing happen is to try to discover the rightful owner myself and return it directly to them.
Let me put it this way
If you try to spend it chances are people are going to be like wow this is a lot of money and they're going to check in on you and they're going to realize oh hey you either stole it or you've been lying to the IRS
Now can you imagine having the IRS up your ass over suspected tax evasion? Not gonna be fun. If you try to keep it you're going to have to launder it because guess what the bank will get suspicious and you'll probably have the IRS knocking on your door again. You could try to launder the money to make it look like you earned it fair and square but let's face it that's going to cost a lot of money and if you want it done right that's going to cost even more money. By the time you're done laundering the money you're going to have like $600 okay sure the drug dealers get away with it but that's because they make a lot of money it's not just one guy selling drugs it's thousands and thousands of people it's an entire corporation basically there's like a system to it and it makes a lot of money
Oh yeah sure I guess you could falsify documents to make it look like multiple people put in money but do you think anyone here is smart enough to do that? That's either going to require a lot of intelligence or a lot of money which still negates the point in doing it.
that's a big and odd sum to lose assumably. you never know what happened on the other side. I might first, or rather, advertsize found money and see if anyone can identify it sufficiently... location, amount, etc.. I'd turn it in to police thereafter, or who knows how I'm feeling..
I turned in a good working cell phone recently by tracking down the owner. lady dropped it out in the parking lot.
recently had someone turn in my wifes purse. that would have been a headache if they took it.
there's decent people out there... thank you! people do lose stuff. I think more importantly, to find missing persons and recover them. That is the worst... I cannot imagine losing a family member and not knowing where they are. $ is replaceable.
I picked 'D'.
I sure as hell wouldn't give to the police.
If I knew who it belonged to, I'd return it. But I couldn't do that if I didn't know who it belonged to.
If I didn't know who it belonged to, I'd wonder why someone was carrying around that kind of cash. I'd hope it wasn't someone who had withdrawn their life savings to pay for something important. But chances are, that kind of cash was a result of some illicit activity, in which case I'd be elated to spend it. I could use $2600.
If I put it in my checking account, I could return the money later if I found out that it belonged to someone who needed it.
B and D. I Put up some flyers near where I found it, saying I found something that someone lost, but leave it vague and don't tell them it's money or exactly how much it is. I also tell them to only address me by email. I give them 48 hours to respond to me. If no one claims it by then, I put it in the bank and take the flyers down. I'd be able to keep it with a clear conscience by then. Of course, if someone does respond and says they lost their money and can tell me it's exactly $2,600 without me saying the specific amount, I'd give it back to them.
I found $100 on the ground before you look around and if it looks like it belongs to somebody you tell them but you don’t tip your hand and say to so stranger that just walked up is this your money to them because it may not be there money and of course they’re going to say yes it is and take it you can tell if somebody’s missing something they keep looking around then you hand it over to them
Same thing for me
@TonyMetal___86 Awesome bro
Thanks
@TonyMetal___86 You’re welcome
Keep it or pay my car loan.
If it’s there on the ground just like that… why tf would I take it to the cops? They about to keep it themselves! LMAOOO XD 😂
If I can't work out who it belongs to then I will take it down to the police station. In the UK if no one has claimed it within 6 weeks it's all yours.
Since the rose part of me is a thing, I'll TRY and see if there's any identificaiton with it. None? Mine now.
E sounds like the most fun, but I chose A. At least it would give me an excuse to smile at a few uniformed officers. 😋
Depends if i can figure out who's money it is, like if its a wallet with a id id return it, but if i have no ideas who's it is then well... Free Money!
I would hold onto it for a year or so. I would not put it in the bank. Then I would spend it. Unless it was clear who the owner was.
Depends. Likely let the sheriff know I have found money, and let them handle it. I'm not greedy enough to put myself at risk
If there is a obvious owner return it if not pay bills
IF there's any way to find out who it belonged to, try to find them and give it back. If not, keep it!!
Look for an ID if it's in a wallet otherwise it goes into my business, make them some interest if they ask for it back in the future
I turn it into the police. If it's not claimed within a certain amount of time, it becomes mine.
If I saw who dropped it I will return it. If not, then I am saving and investing.
As for me I would walk down the street & the first homeless person I see I’ll walk up to that person & hand it to them & walk off.
No ID , I keep it. I might put AD online telling them to tell me how much it was , then give it back. I did Gold rings like that before that I found
