As a VERY ameture do it yourselfer, which type of power tools do you recommend?

I can definitely do things around the house but have been using my dad's old beat up Craftsmen power tools. I need to buy another set but wonder if Craftsmen is a good set to have around the house? My dad has had them for ever but they seem junky compared to my brothers Milwaukee set but the cost for a set of Milwaukee is OUTRAGEOUS! Is Dewalt about the same as Milwaukee? Is Craftsmen good enough, for the price, to just do things around the house?

I have multiple Dewalt tools, corded and battery powered. I've used Milwaukee tools also. Personally, I have no preference. The only Bosch tool I own is a corded jigsaw - bought that a couple years ago. It's a bit heavy, but it gets the job done extremely well.

My battery tools (drill and impact driver) are used the most. Light weight and strong enough to drive bits and screws are what I wanted.

Yeah, I know some of those cost a bunch. But if you buy decent quality tools, they'll last for quite a while. I had older Craftsman tools - a jigsaw, drill, and circular saw. After 30+ years, they were due for an upgrade and I went with Dewalt. I haven't regretted that decision. Look for sales on power tools at Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Ace. Memorial Day is coming up as well as Father's Day. Both are good times to score a whole set (3-4 tools as a group) on sale.

The lightness is what I like. I have a bad arm and using old saws and drills kill me! My Craftsmen circular saw probably weighs 10ish pounds. A friend has ridge? Cordless, I'm thinking about them... they're not too expensive and feel light and have some good power. Are you familiar with them?

You mean a battery circular saw? They typically come in 5" size, not 7.25" corded type. Battery circular saws usually don't have a ton of power and as long as you're not cutting anything thing thicker than a 2x-whatever, you should be OK. I don't think a 5" blade can cut anything thicker anyway.

You mean Ridgid? Those are sold primarily at Home Depot and their tools usually rate in the upper half of most tool tests. My brother has a few of them. They work pretty darn good too!

My 1st Dewalt drill had the standard lead-zinc batteries. I switched to lithium and I gained about a pound less weight. Then I ended up dropping the thing from my ladder and after that it never worked as good. Bought drill #2 and I've had that one now for 5+ years.

If you get battery tools, opt for as much voltage as possible (I'd go for the 20V ones). They do cost more, but the advantage is you get decent battery life, enuf power to do what you want, and usually a variety of tools you can swap the battery with. Also recommend at least 2 batteries. One can charge while your using the other one.

If your dads tools still do the job i would keep on using them. Maybe just replace the drillbits/sawblade/... with some new high quality ones

But if you really want to buy some powertools, i would recommend buying some medium to high quality ones, they will last a lifetime.

They do the job but are electric and extremely heavy. When I used my brothers cordless tools they were so light and small with the same power. His are Milwaukee but is Craftsmen cordless good? They are cheaper in price but but I'm wondering about quality.

Sears is going out of business so I do not know where that leaves Craftsman tools. I had Craftsman power tools in the past. They were good quality and lasted forever. My son has my drill and my other son has the power saw. I have DeWalt rechargeable power tools and I have a Milwaukee Sawzall and power saw. They are all good quality.
