Where are you supposed to look while walking in a crowd?

In all seriousness I don’t know where to place my eyes. Usually my eyes are eye leveled and looking forward or glancing around, but many people told me I look weird and abnormal. This bothers me greatly. Can anyone tell me where they normally look in public? Do you look at peoples faces or something?

I have had others tell me the exact same thing. My habits come from being VERY security cautious. I look everyone that comes near me in the eye. Then I do a quick scan of the crowd. It can easily be done without coming across as creepy or paranoid.

Personally, I think this is a valid and wise practice.
