Where are you supposed to look when walking past people, especially friends?

Some people you can glance at for a tenth of a second and now they're looking at you.

When am I supposed to "notice" someone and say hi?

When I'm feeling social I naturally land my eyes on whoever and smile, nod, say hi or whatever comes out naturally. They may or may not say hi back, but it's fine. It's good practice. I do this quickly and move on to looking at something else to avoid coming off invasive. (Most people might not even think I'm being invasive, it's just an insecurity I have)

When I'm feeling reserved I may look at them really quick then move on to something else like my phone or whatever is around. Sometimes I look down and smile after our eyes meet.

If I'm feeling extremely shy or angry I just won't look at anyone at all and stay in my own world.
