To me, the time it takes to travel somewhere is more relevant and useful than actual distance in miles or kilometers. For example, if someone asks me "how far" someplace is from me, my response will often be in terms of travel time: "about 30 minutes" or "just over two hours," etc.
This can drive some people nuts. My late grandmother used to ask for distance, and I would give her approximate travel team. She would often snap "I didn't ask how long, I asked how far!" As I got older, I told her if she wanted distance, my name was Saoirse, not Google Maps or Mapquest. She could look it up herself.
