I called someone this as a joke and I don't know if they took it well or not.

Most of the time, probably. I would consider it weird. German nationals with German ancestry would likely be off put by it even more. They may even feel guilty for their countries history, however it’s crucial that you understand and establish that pretty much all Germans are not responsible for the actions for others. No one is. You made the opposite implication, even if in jest.

Censoring them if they react negatively is also a very, VERY bad idea. That’s the very thing that started WW2, when Germans were blamed and punished for WW1 at the Paris Peace Conference, and Germany was not allowed to advocate or negotiate for themselves. Wilson at the time had come down with the Spanish Flu and it was said it hindered his ability to push his 14 points proposal where no nation would have been explicitly and solely punished. One of the points was to allow all of Europe to self-determine their future through freedom. So, after reparations were imposed and hyperinflation happened where all Germans were turned into literal millionaires and commodities like a loaf of bread also rose from costing a hundred Reichmarks to millions of Reichmarks, a huge backlash happened. The Nazis party was then rallied by Hitler and he often pointed the finger at moneylenders and government officials who not only happened to be the primary money lenders, they also were the ones who failed to advocate for Germany in the Treaty of Versailles, and many of them were Jewish. That’s not to say they didn’t try or would have refused the opportunity, they just failed in his eyes and this was a main talking point for Hitler, this happens in politics all the time (Bush did this, Obama did that, Trump did this, Biden is doing that). There was also a huge disdain for what was going on in the Weimar republic with mass influxes of immigrants, high unemployment, and costs quite literally going through people’s roofs when they has to default on their homes (banks were often owned and staffed with Jewish employees) to eat. Which also became a talking point for Hitler which only further enraged Germans and pushed them to rally to his cause.

Had this happened in any other country, it’s very, very possible they would have reacted the same. Jews have been persecuted from multiple countries throughout Europe mainly because of moneylending and usury. Christians in a sense catalyzes the hatred toward Jews when they did not believe in lending money with interest. Jesus taught unconditional forgiveness and lending money with interest would have been an unchristian thing to do, especially to the poor.

Hopefully this clarifies why they were taken aback by your seemingly harmless comment. There’s far more the the subject, but this is kind of a gist. It’s not simple black and white, there’s grey everywhere.

Well Nazi gave the whole Aryan thing a bad name, but just because some might be Aryan does not mean they are racist or a Nazi.

Aryans are supposedly Indo-European... some say they are hypothetical races and not a true race of people. Because Aryans would of originated north of India, and then migrated across European from Iran and all the Stans, as a none Jewish race of white people basically with Scandinavian or Nordic features... which again would not come from people of Middle Eastern descent but Nordic descent. If Aryans did originate in the Middle East or any where East for that matter, they would have darker features.

But it was a race made up or not, that was popularized by Nazi propaganda to be descents of a superior race. So its kind of like calling someone a Nazi with out saying Nazi.

Just inaccurate- the Aryans were central Asian, not European. You probably have blonde hair and blue eyes among them NOW, but not back when the Aryans were a distinct ethnic group. Hitler just failed to learn his history.

I suppose you could claim you called them Arian, not Aryan, after the guy who was so abrasively obnoxious that he got punched by Santa Claus, or, if it was typed, "a Ryan", which is almost always less offensive.
