Do people that cut ever stop cutting?

self-harming in this way, by cutting, way more often than not is a coping mechanism... and it comes as result of something else like depression, anxiety or stress from trauma (and other things)
and it is also often presented in younger people, so yes... in many cases they can stop this behavior when there's a treatment to whatever is causing their emotional distress, if you can help your mental health situation you can also learn skills and have tolls to deal with such distress instead of going with the cutting as a coping mechanism
I had a few coping mechanisms when I was young and dealing with a few issues, including some cutting for a very brief but significant time, and somehow I managed to "quit" them al... but like I said, was more of helping myself with the overall situation, which made it possible to work on other ways to deal with things
as for your question... "does the majority stop" I don't know of statistics or who would be actually gathering these statistics, which, should come from the offices of therapists who are actually practicing on these fields
So they gotta fix the core of the problem is what you are saying
ideally, and usually... yes
not sure the correct word is "fix" sometimes you just learn how to deal with things in much better ways, you find ways to control or mitigate and help your situation
I do not consider my depression completely gone or totally fixed, like @ShaTTeredMasterpeace said, she had not done for 11 years and then something happened which made things challenging again, well... for me it's been around 16 years since these things have been "dormant" for me but I would never rule out that these thing could come back, or other situations in life could trigger it and bringing back
like many things in life, it is all a process and a journey and you have to go day by day, year by year and so on...
Well said Leo, well said.
Fair enough
You can do it over say your teens, then stop.
the next time you self hard you may choose another way, such as picking fights you likely can’t win etc.
Then you stop for a good while, something occurs and then you push yourself to another type of self harm and spend a year abusing yourself with sex, sex with any girl, sometimes 2 different in a day, 3 over a weekend, you can really abuse your body and mind, emotions by having 100’s of one night stands.
then you stop for years and you suffer another thing, then the sharp blade 🔪 comes out and the blood 🩸🩸 flows.
Yes you can stop, however it’s always a voice in the back of your head.
i type this with two fresh marks..
And there's no way to tell that voice to shut up, you are control of your mind or is your mind in control of you
Yes, I am not a fan of cutting veggies. I would gladly skip that part when cooking a dish if I can.
Jokes aside. My addiction being suicidal was, inhaling water. Yeah yeah really weird but I liked the feeling of sharp pain hitting my brain and wished that it would make me sick till death if I do it often. And now I stopped! So sliting wrist addiction may also stop if the victim have hopes for a beautiful life.
Well I'm glad you stopped purposely inhaling water, that sounds like it can cause some serious permanent injuries to the brain, you are smart and you should keep your brain that way, hopefully the people that cut get their happy ending
Some do. Some overcome the need to self harm. And some don't.
I stopped when I was 17 and didn't do it for 11 years. And then had something happen that triggered me enough to start up again. As @NathanDavis said, it's a coping mechanism. For me, it's about control. Cutting is a pain that I have full control over as opposed to emotional pain that has the tendency to be suffocating.

I'm not sure I'd imagine they'd stop, once things brighten up you know
Yea If it does, fair enough
I know some who have but it took Jesus the Christ as both Lord and Savior to do it.
They stopped permanently? They haven't done it again or you aren't sure
