Why is America so wasteful?

It’s not just America, but most of the world seems to be guilty of throwing away perfectly fine food and many other resources that others can use. There’s not always places or people that you can give extra or leftover food/resources to because of logistical or legal reasons. For example, a restaurant throws away a lot of leftover food, but why wouldn’t they just give it to the poor or needy? Well, maybe they just don’t care enough to inquire about that, maybe it’s not legal to do that, maybe there’s no donation centers nearby, etc.

I work in landscaping and if there is a mistake on a order a lot of times the plants just get thrown away sounds stupid but our dumpster is usually filled with stuff like that sometimes i will give the plants away but all my friends yards are already filled right now i have 4 pallets of wall block im trying to give away

Sometimes its mandated (ex: expired food, etc.).
As a general rule, people are as wasteful as their wallets allow.
