I asked my brother to buy a lighter for me yesterday, he is 12. However, the staff at the market did not allow him... So, how old do you have to be to buy a lighter in the USA?
There is no age restriction on the sale of lighters or matches in America. Some merchants might refuse to sell them to minors, but legally there is no basis for it. It's more so they are just trying to be responsible and prevent kids from getting into trouble. Merchants can generally refuse to sell items to people for good reason. If a kid is talking about lighting a forest fire with their friends on isle 2 and then come to the register with a box of matches and some lighter fluid, the merchant can be like none, I'm not selling it to you.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Buy A Lighter?
In order to buy a lighter, you must be at least 18 years old. This is because lighters contain a small amount of butane, which is a flammable gas. Butane is also used in some aerosolable products, like hair spray. If you are under 18, you may still be able to purchase a lighter if you have a parent or guardian with you.
Most lighters have a picture of a flaming skull and crossbones on them. This is to warn users that the butane is flammable and can cause fires. If you see this symbol on a lighter, it means that the butane is highly flammable and should be used with caution.
- Lighters are often used to light cigarettes, cigars, and pipes.
- Butane is also used in some fuel-powered devices, like portable stovetops.
When using a lighter, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and make sure that there is nothing flammable nearby.
So, in summary, you must be 18 years old to buy a lighter due to the butane gas inside of it. Lighters are also very dangerous if not used correctly and can easily cause fires. Be sure to use caution when using a lighter and always keep an eye on your surroundings.
Can you buy a lighter under the age of 18 in the U. S?
There is no federal law in the United States that explicitly prohibits the sale of lighters to minors, but many states have enacted their own laws on the matter. In general, it is illegal to sell tobacco products, including lighters, to minors under the age of 18. Some states have raised the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products to 21.
Lighters are typically sold in convenience stores, gas stations, and other retail outlets that also sell tobacco products. Many of these retailers have policies in place that prohibit the sale of lighters to minors, even if there is no state law mandating such a policy.
It is important to note that even if it is legal to sell a lighter to a minor in a particular state, it may still be illegal to sell them tobacco products to go along with it. For example, in California it is illegal to sell tobacco products to minors, even if the minor is over the age of 18.
So, in short, the answer to the question is that it depends on the state in which you are attempting to purchase a lighter. Some states have no laws prohibiting the sale of lighters to minors, while others have laws that make it illegal to sell tobacco products to minors, even if the minor is over the age of 18.
Why Is There a Legal Age To Buy a Lighter?
There are a few reasons why there is a legal age to buy a lighter:
- The first reason is that lighters can be used to start fires. If someone were to start a fire with a lighter that they bought illegally, the store that sold them the lighter could be held liable.
- The second reason is that lighters can be used to inhale chemicals. This is especially harmful to developing brains, so the legal age is meant to protect young people from doing this.
- Finally, lighters can be used as weapons. If someone were to use a lighter to hurt someone else, the store that sold them the lighter could be held liable.

Common sense applies. There is no age restriction. But what good reason does a 12 yr. Old need with a lighter? You're pretty much rolling the dice on how stupid the clerk is. Back in the day when I worked a convenience store one of the guys I worked with accepted a 3 dollar bill. 🤣
Depends on the city, county, state. A lot of places won't sell them because it's associated with smoking
Why didn't you simply buy it yourself?
Smart staff.
