Do you fall asleep watching something or are you normal lol? How do you fall asleep?

Question

Since a few years by now I have problems falling asleep, mostly my brain is still on and thinking a lot and so I keep myself awake.
I also wake up multiple times a night but yeah that's something else.

Anyways I figured out that it helps me a lot to watch a movie or mostly a YouTube video (true crime), so that my brain is not too distracted with thinking and let's me fall asleep lol

With my ex, I always fell asleep scratching his back/head and that calmed me down too but yeah

I can never fall asleep while watching something, phone or TV... my mind just never stops, hyper thinking and going all over the place as well, so all that extra stimulation only makes it worse

if I start a movie or any videos after midnight, especially after 2am... guaranteed I'll be up watching till 6am unless I force myself top stop it, lol

I'm a former insomniac and maybe I never was... could be just my cycles messed up, because for years and years now, I have been going to bed around 2am, and then I wake up around 8am or shortly before that and I always feel fine for the rest of the day on those six hours of sleep

also... I never actually try to fall asleep, I have quit on that decades ago, what I do focus on every night is just to try and rest, absolutely no lights in my chambers, none... no alarms, keep sounds to a minimum and then I just close my eyes, move as less as possible, control my breathing and just relax... not to fall asleep, just to rest while I lie down

now, of course that won't stop my hyper thinking an always busy mind, so what I try in my mind is... instead of trying not to think about something, I just try my very best to focus on one thought only and to stay in that one thought for as long as possible, and every time my mind wanders or jumps to something else, I just bring it back to that one thought I picked for that night and eventually this helps me to relax and rest, and eventually fall asleep sooner rather than later (which, can still take from 40 minutes to an hour)

Here's how I solved it: Step by step below*

1.) Take a melatonin 2.) Imagine yourself on a vacation with a person of your choice/celebrity crush etc 3.) Truly believe you're there, and try to imagine it happening in real time as you slowly drift into the sleep cycle 4.) Actually make imaginary conversation while you're on this dream vaca with this person, pretend it's 100% real. 5.) Don't stop it at dinner or whatever you're doing. Keep the fantasy going until you are asleep, and you can always change locations/people. Why not, it's a dream! Embrace it! 6.) Make sure you begin thinking about this prior to getting into bed so it is ingrained into your subconcious 7.) Get a body pillow and pretend it's that person 8.) Put on rainmood. com as background noise 8.) Buy a Marlow pillow also, it's the best thing ever lol 9.) Enjoy your sleep :)

Oh me and sleep have a funny relationship! I kinda take it when I can get it.

I need light and sound so often its a tv show I've already seen and I know when this stems back to. There are times where I'll go audiobooks too to help me sleep (but sometimes backfires...)

If possible do try to avoid technology they say. Adult colouring can be helpful to calm you before bed. I liked one reply of laying still and focusing on one thought... shame I'm a fidget and my mind always has a thousand thoughts and a song playing somewhere haha.

Also try to make sure you aren't too hot or too cold when going to sleep as that can really make things more difficult.

I cannot go to bed without the tv playing in the background. I usually put it on YouTube and play relaxing sounds, horror stories, ask reddit stories... just background noise. It helps me fall asleep

I'm currently in bed now watching horror stories from Mr. Nightmare

I have a sleep/reading playlist I listen to with not too rowdy songs. I listen to it while reading (kind of puts a background song and allows me to visualize the scene in my head) and background noise to let me shut my brain off to sleep.

I cannot have the TV on because I try to watch it instead of going to sleep. But I need some type of noise or I have a very hard time falling asleep. My Dog Cooper sleeps with me I find sometimes without his weight on me I have a hard time sleeping too.

I guess of the two choices, I am normal. However, I do take a prescription before bedtime and it puts me into la la land in 20 minutes.
But, now I cannot sleep unless I am hunkered down with my human 🧸 bear. I love to spoon him and put my hand on his masculine hairy chest and hold his hand with my other hand.
Only then can I fall asleep.

It's hard for me to fall asleep. I can't have noise yet most of the time my mind is going crazy. I argue, but it wins and keeps me up or wakes me. I only fall asleep with the TV on if I'm super tired. But it wakes me not long after. One girlfriend I was with had kids. The youngest needed the TV on. Once he fell asleep, I would go across the house and turn it off. Even when the volume was at 6. Lol

I had that before I took control of my mind and went to therapy, worked out a lot and learnt to change the way I think.

Stay clear of stimulants after 6pm, turn off all tv, go to the gym after 4 but no later than 8pm. Stuff like this worked for me.

It happens when your mind is thinking sub consciously and is still not entered chill mode

No I can fall asleep easily sometimes I cry before sleep which makes me more tired sometimes I'm out the moment my head hits the pillow. I painted my room a dark navy blue and dark curtains so when I shut off my tv it's completely pitch black, it's relaxing.
