You have a camera with a roll of film in it, you take a picture on the film, It gets developed and the negative is used to print a positive on a sheet of photo paper.

If you're talking about motion picture film, you shoot the original footage and I think the film gets copied to another roll of film where it's made into a positive. The positives are what are edited and further processed into the final edits copies are made and sent to the movie theatres.
