A disused local military barracks has come up for sale for £500,000 (roughly $591,874 according to Google) or about the same price as a one bedroom flat in London.
It's advertised as,
"The imposing structure was built between 1841 and 1846 and comprises a 20-sided stone fort surrounded by a dry moat measuring 16 feet deep by 42 feet wide.

The moat is crossed by a fixed modern steel bridge that replaced the original wooden sliding drawbridge that leads to the gatehouse which is in the middle of the north wall.
It is enclosed by blocks of barrack rooms, mess areas, magazines and gun sheds while the basements were originally used for laundry, stores, latrines and magazines."

It was the last trace bastion fort built in Europe, Making it the ideal home if your a gun nut.

Not me, since it is historical probably be legally required to fix it up (as your expense) to historical standards. Won't be able to remodel or things like that.

At least that is how it is around here, I know someone who bought a historical pioneer house then complained that the windows to replace them were 10k cause they had to be custom ordered and built to stick with legal requirements, when she could of got windows for 2k had the house not been flagged as a historical house.

She also couldn't put electrical wires in the walls, had to run them along the base of each of the walls, with plugs every so often.

Can't install things like duct work for forced heated AC or gas furnaces. Has to either use electric heat (way super expensive) or a wood burning stove/fireplace.

Naturally people think electrical heat is the most environmentally friendly but also the most expensive for her.

I saw a 40-story skyscraper available in the Philippines for not much more than that one time while fantasizing away at my idea of owning my own skyscrapers and helicopters and beaches. I think I'd prefer the skyscraper complete with electricity and plumbing and all that if I was rich enough to afford either of them.

@hafinjun In USD terms and this was around 2005 or so, $620,000 USD. It was the cheapest I could find and maybe with some questionability to its state. But 40-story skyscraper! Wow!

@hafinjun In central Tokyo where I was living at the time, even the smallest rundown house cost that much. Then I looked outside the world and I was also working remotely as a software engineer paid by USD but converted to the currency in whatever country I lived. So it almost seemed affordable with my salary to buy my own skyscraper back then in the Phillipines.

Personally I don't have the drive nor the money, but sure is many different projects must be worth considering: cooperative, appartements, workrooms of any kind, social projects, hospital, research center, sports or training center, etc. You name it...

I would Acquire it using a REIT's remodel it, and turn it into a place

1) for couples to spend quality time with each other..

2) turn it into a Paintball arena.

3) Turn it into a Paintball arena where people can come and watch live matches between paintball players!.. And even stream ir online!..

i mean i would have to get an engineer to see if the thing is structually sound and all. then probably invest like probably another 200.000 to restructure the building to fit indvidual appartments. i'm guessing roughly 30 appartments each 500bucks a month is reasonable. deduct 100 bucks of running cost from each tennant and make it 400. roughly after 5 years the expenses will be paid off and i'll make 12.000 bucks a month just collecting the rent.

I'd love to buy it but the hidden costs of upkeep would be prohibitive. I bet also that it would get a Grade listing if it doesn't have one already and that would render future use and modifications really difficult and even more expensive.
