I've been listening to music when I go to bed ever since i was about 15, or so.
When I start my stack of music for the night (usually about 3.5 hours worth) I'll turn the volume down from at least 6 to about 2. When I sitting here deciding if it's quiet enough, it actually sounds like it's a tad too low but, I leave it there, shut out the light and get into bed. and, by the time I get settled in bed, it sounds like it's back up to 5 or 6!! I have to reach over and turn it down again!

Surely someone out there must have a scientific explanation for that phenomenon.
I've experienced it myself.
I'm guessing it's partly psychological and partly physiological.
What I'm wondering is that you'd think that after 40 years of the same ritual, you'd have a particular volume figured out for your nightly listening by now.
Enjoy!

I suspect that it's actually your ears that pick up sound better when you go to bed in case, from centuries past, someone tries to sneak up on you and attack you!
One night, I was home in bed sound asleep when, I heard a tiny squeak from the bottom step up to my room on the third floor and I immediately woke up!! Turns out, it was my uncle from a block away!! He caught a cold from a visit from my aunt Betty a few months before and it really fucked with his brain!! Before the cold, he was sharp as a tack and in his late 80's!! By this time, he had a bad case of dementia and thought people were after him and he got into my house SOMEHOW, to get away from them and ask for help!! I got dressed and helped him get back downstairs and, just as we were near the bottom steps, his wife walked in the front door and he said she was one of the ones trying to hurt him!! I told him that she wasn't gonna hurt him, she's his wife! "Oh! I'm married to her?" Yeah, for about 70 years! "Oh! Well, if you say so then, I guess I am!" She took him back home.
Well, I've used about a dozen different set-ups, since I started. I HAVE usually found the correct setting but, it always just sounds louder when I lay down. In a few cases, I didn't care how loud it was and, in others, I'd have it so low that one more notch lower and there'd be nothing!

I'm sorry about your uncle, but lol anyway.
When I first started reading the above tale, I thought you were going off on another fantastical journey of mind-bending mayhem which I would have of course been compelled to counter with my own dream-world scenarios.
It's a good thing for me that you didn't do so. I've been awake for 36 hours.
I don't think I have it in me right now to come back at you with witches, squatches, 'pleasure-fairies' and the like.
If I'm awake much longer though, my delirium may find itself displaying its strangeness on these pages!

Yeah, changing equipment will mess with a person's audio muscle memory, sometimes for years at a time!
Thanks. It WAS KINDA funny but, for as loopy as he'd become, I have NO idea how he was able to get into the house!! I was alone and have no idea how he found the key to unlock the door!! He hadn't even VISITED us for a decade or better!!
Oh! You're doing the 36 hour days thing, too! I haven't had one in at least a month or two but was getting quite a few over the summer!! Now, if I can just get back to going to bed by about 3 or 4 and getting up BEFORE noon!!
Well, you better get to bed, then!! You don't want to break the internet!!
@FunkyMonkee
I sleep when it comes upon me, and I wake up when I wake up.
No two days are the same.
The 'sleep doctors' have been telling me to practice 'sleep hygiene' my whole life.
It doesn't work.
It's already too late for the internet.
That's been broken for years!
Sleep hygiene? What's that, you take a shower in bed?
What's a 'bed'?
I've been sleeping in a recliner or on the floor for 30 years.
Mom and her sister were doing the same thing the last few years of their lives. They just couldn't walk the stairs to bed, anymore.
Yes, it always sounds louder at 3 in the morning.
