Where is the best place to buy your first car? I was thinking of using cars. com or is a dealership better?

Never bought a car but maybe there's some hidden perks or advantages of a dealership? 🤔🤔🤔

I personally go private sales. There are dealerships out there that take a trade in and don’t do anything to it maintenance wise or they’ll do the bare minimum and then sell it for a stupid amount of money.


But you also have to be careful buying private. I got mine on marketplace private sale because I couldn’t afford car payments, insurance and bills. Now the car I got wasn’t maintained well and is honestly garbage. I should have listened to my friend who said he wouldn’t get it himself. And I had an insane repair bill within the first few months or purchase. So if you go with a private seller offer to pay to have it looked over so you’re not getting a lemon. My next vehicle is going to be brand new from the dealership because I’m done with shit cars

Dealerships are always going to be higher priced than other places. They also try to rip you off at all levels. Go to edmunds. com and look for the car you're interested in. It will give you reviews, ratings, and common sales prices. With this information, you can shop around online. FB marketplace, craigslist, autotrader, etc. are good choices. Always take a prospective purchase to a dealership to have their mechanics take a look at them. They'll usually charge you about $150 or so to do a once-over on the car.

Nobody advertises in the newspaper anymore. I would look online. I have used one of the online sites to sell a car and it worked pretty good.

Get a copy of Edmunds and check out what the car you are interested in is selling for elsewhere.

If possible buy a well-rated, used, recent year, still under warranty vehicle from a private party.
