What was your first car? Was it worth the price?

2005 VW Golf 5. I later learned that the actual good Golf 5 was the one made in 2006. My parents bought it from a family friend for dirt cheap (less than €2k, when they were usually going for around €4k). I was always in service with it. Doors wouldn't close, so I couldn't leave anything in the car. Something will always break. The brakes somehow soldered themselves to a wheel when I was on the highway, so I had to drive on the emergency lane until the first exit and I barely got to the mechanic. Than at some point the spark plugs shorted out and caught fire, burning a few parts in the engine that needed to be changed. The freon from the AC started leaking inside and the mechanic said I needed to change a bunch of tubes or I would suffocate and die, because freon is hazardous (not an expensive repair, but still, what the fuck, why would a car do that). I can't remember more events, but I know I also had a bunch of electrical problems with it. I eventually couldn't take it anymore so I drove as recklessly as possible (not in terms of speed), and eventually cracked the oil reservoir on a dirt road, after accidentally hitting a stupid hidden hydrant in the middle of the road, covered by a tiny bush. That eventually caused the engine to solder itself and to never start again. My father had faith that he could repair it, spent 1k, got the car running and the car started smoking 5 miles away from the mechanic, on the way home. We eventually sold that car for parts for 1k, and I was glad it was finally gone.
TL;DR Never buy yourself a VW. There is a reason why parts are cheap and readily available. We owned a Toyota Corolla from the same period (2006) and it never broke down in over 18 years of serving us. We just bought a new Toyota and it is the best investment into a car we could have made.
When I turned 16 in 1970, my parents gave me a dark blue 1966 Rambler American 2dr, hard top.
I started driving it to high school and had a lot of fun it it.
At some point, I had to get the tranny rebuilt. Later, I crashed it while avoiding a head on collision with an idiot. The insurance company determined that it was the other guy's fault.

Then my dad bought a new car and gave me his '63 Buick Le Sabre 2dr hard top with a 401 cu in engine. It was an amazing car! I had so much fun in it. I christened it the Bismarck. Ride of the Valkyries was its theme song.

Mine was midnight blue with a white top.
The first car I bought myself was a pale green 1969 Chevy El Camino. I liked that car a lot.

But I sold it in the mid '70s and bought a souped up '72 El Camino. It had a small block 325 engine bored out to 350 with an RV cam; a modified trans and rear end, a Hearst shifter, air shocks in back, and wide tires. The back was raised up so that the top of the bed was parallel to the ground. Mine was the manufacture's gold color. That thing could really go!
I thought I was Johnny Race in that car. Highway Star by Deep Purple was its theme song.
Had a 1995 bmw 3 series in black. Bought it off some young guy going to uni. Best car ever no joke. So spacious, was in perfect condition as his dad worked for bmw and they had heaps of things done to it and kept it in perfect condition. Paid nz$2700. The guy did not want to sell it but needed the money.
I crashed it at 18…😬 still was the greatest car and would get it again.
My first car was a new 2010 Ford Focus, which was a gift from my parents when I was seventeen for passing my driving test first time... I have no idea at all how much cost, but I know it was an awful lot of money... Since then I have changed it every three years for a new Ford Focus, and now have the Titanium X model.

Mine was a "mustard yellow" 1972 Chevrolet Vega hatchback that I bought from my uncle for $400. It was April 1981 and I was 18 and in my last 2 months of high school.

Was it worth it? I suppose so. It did give me some problems as Vegas were prone to do, but I am still happy I had it. It lasted 2 years before I cooked the engine in April 1983.
you've learned a valuable lesson about cars. Nissan is now a renault since around 2005... they fall apart. I had several nissan and after 120k miles, they are junk... constant repairs.
Get rid of that car and get a good condition toyota or honda. there may be a few others that are good... always check history for that vintage car to understand what goes wrong. In genereal, toyota are best.
first car was a honda and burned oil, but ran good. a lot of hondas burn oil. toyotas, generally don't.
Mine was a $700 Volkswagen. I was a senior in high school and bought it from a guy that fixed it up after an engine fire. It was worth every penny.
I have such fond memories. It was a good car, but suddenly I had so much freedom. It enabled me to experience things I never imagined. I went to so many different places with friends. Hanging out, sports, music, theater.
Two days after bringing it home on a cold winter's night. A friend asked for a ride after a basketball game. Mary was a beautiful Lebanese American with piercing dark brown eyes. Somehow, we ended up in the back seat and kissed for what seemed like hours. It was heaven. She was my first real kiss. I was so immature... but that's a story for another time.
My first car was a 1988 Z28 Camaro Black with silver ground effects , I loved that car and had a lot of fun with it , I got it for a steal because it was a friend of a friend that sold me the car , I got it for 500 bucks and I only had to drop about 200 into it to fix it up , It lasted me a few years until the transmission had problems , so I ended up selling it and a guy gave me 1200 for it , so it was a win win for me all around lol
Right now, my first car is an imaginary existing car.
I don't have a licence yet and have not bought a car yet😅 I will buy a Cheap car to use for 2 years and then when I've saved a lot for a car and appartement, I will buy a better car.
I like big black cars. I want to buy a black jeep, a Range Rover, BMW, Volvo, Volkswagen, a big combi Nissan or Citroën.
I had a Chevy Nova hatchback. It was a 1985. it had a 5 speed transmission and a 4 cylinder engine. I asses an FM Radio/ cassette deck combination and had stereo speakers in the back. I think I paid a thousand dollars for it. It was a nice little car. I had it for 5 or 6 years. I drove it halfway across the country and back again once.

I bought this beauty from a cop.
This is what I really wanted.
But now they are a zillion bucks.
They are slow, but they have a sink, Few cars have sinks.
It's not necessary, unless you want to be a smooth operator.
See the sample picture:

In the back I built in a bed and a breakfast pantry.
It was worth each penny - no other car after that matched this one's fun factor.
I'll buy it from you (depending on the price) I flip cars
My first car was a decommissioned police interceptor. It was worth the price, but not worth the headache when the sheriff's office gave mine to someone else and tried to give me a shitbox that had a load of problems 🤦♂️
Ended up getting a lawyer to make them give me my money back
@spartan55 Often, but not always. If you're smart about it, you get some gems. The trick is to buy ones that are A) low mileage/idle hours and/or B) weren't actually just daily patrol vehicles. They almost all say "patrol" on the side though, so you have to know what to look for.
Examples:
1. Find a county that just bought a new fleet of vehicles. Within a few months, you'll see that county's decommissioned vehicles for sale.
2. Find a "patrol" vehicle that spent most of its life sitting in the parking lot of a school. These are pretty rare since counties usually use older worn-out vehicles for this, but some counties do this with newer vehicles too.
3. Find a federal LE vehicle. These vehicles are less commonly involved in chases since federal cops can't legally (and usually don't care to) enforce state/county laws such as speeding. Even with 120-160k miles, these are pretty good finds.
Just like for any other auction purchase though the biggest thing is to go do your research on that specific vehicle via online resources, emailing the county, and calling workers at the lot where the vehicle is being held.
Well hard to say. My dad bought me a car to drive around in but he kept the title. 86 ford escort L. Later it overheated and cost of repairs outweighed what he bought it for. So he traded it in for a 93 ford tempo gl. Now that was a fun car. Dark gray metallic exterior but hated the burgundy interior. I guess the first actual car that I bought and have the title to is my 2007 Honda civic. I still own it to this day and love it. I’m now at 257,000 actual miles 🙂
My first car was my grandfather's old Lincoln town car. It was essentially free. Second car was a geo storm gsi, third car was a Chevy blazer, fourth car was a thunderbird with a supercharged v8. I still have that one, it's fun. My current car is a Lexus LFA which has a super charged v10.
My first car was a Zastava Yugo 511 bought for £550 I eventually traded it in for £500 the least depreciation I've ever had on a car I wish I could have kept it even as crappy as it was it's now no longer on the road
My first car was a very old Sky Blue 'escort 1100' mk2 . It cost my parents £50 and it went up in smoke in a fashion akin to a Roadrunner and Wile Coyote cartoon!
Was it worth the price? Yes, well it was until 'kaboom' anyway!
As for your car. What are the symptoms? Does it start?
1976 Camaro for the large sum of $250.00 when I was 14 and a half. It took me a year and half getting it fixed up, except for the paint job. When I turned 16 and got my license I put it on the road and drove it everywhere for a year.
1995 purple pontiac sunfire. It was $1800. Not sure if it was really worth it. Everything broke on it.
My first mode of transportation was a 2000 Harley Davidson sportster 1200 when I was 14 and then I bought a old f250 with a 5 speed now I’m paying for a 2023 f350 tremor limited
1st generation Mazda MX-5 ('Miata') handed down to me.
I still have it.
It's "souped up" to kick ass.
Well first was a project Jeep I got from my dad in exchange for working for him on weekends. First that ran was my Mustang, absolutely worth the money and still have it
It was a Golf GTI, really great car had it ages.
Some Ford. I don't remember the price but it drove so 🤷
A 2005 ford 500 and I loved it I had a sun roof and the backseat was so roomy. My second car was badass I was a lifted truck girly for a couple years.
It was a 66 Chevelle that I bought of my friend for $1500 so he could have a down payment for a new truck. Best money I ever spent, I never should have sold it.
My first one was an old Mustang.
Not as good as it sounds.
First car Nissan Sunny
1983 I think
Good car
I drove it hard and needed to replace engine twice
Cost me 3k at the time I think
And it was 4 years old
Next car was Toyota Carina
Then Ford Mondeo
All good cars
It was a '92 Lincoln stretch I had 20% of at first then 10% but hey we sold it for double so it ended well
First vehicle was a single cab truck. We knew someone at the dealership so I was able to get an employee level monthly payment. Worked for me.
A VW Beetle. I think it was $900. Not worth it, but it was all I could afford.
It's a nice Nissan tho mine is a Lexus is250, still my car to this day
Mine was a black pre owned 2011 Ford Taurus Sel.
It was about $5,000 and yeah, I feel like it was worth the price.
My very first car was a Ford Focus. It got me from A to B. The first car I purchased was an Escalade. To me, well worth it.
My first car was a used 68 Chevy Nova SS with a 396 and 4 on the floor. I think I paid about $1000.00 for it.
Mine was a Nissan too. It was a piece of shit. But when you're young and just getting started, that's what you drive.
A used, gutless Chevy Cavalier (1882 I think) that had been abused by the former owner... not worth the price
A 1978 Pontiac Pheonix. Yeah, I only paid 250 bucks for it.😆
it was a steal...
1986 Pontiac Grand Am
My grandfather's old '66 Malibu.
Currently still waiting to get my first car
