Did you know New York City just had its safest summer since at least 1900?

[goaded]

NYPD ANNOUNCES SAFEST SUMMER FOR SHOOTING INCIDENTS, SHOOTING VICTIMS, AND MURDERS IN RECORDED HISTORY

https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/PR014/nypd-safest-summer-shooting-incidents-shooting-victims-murders-recorded

"Historic Summer Part of Eight-Month Stretch of Fewest Shooting Incidents, Shooting Victims, and Murders in Recorded History

Major Crime Fell 6.6% Citywide in August, Down More than 5,000 Reported Crimes Year to Date

Historic Lows in Shooting Incidents, Shooting Victims, Murders, Rapes, and Robberies in the Subway and Public Housing for August"

[Danzigdawson]

A large city that is safer with a crazy muslim socialist dictator leading it? Without any unwarranted presence of the national guard? That can't be!

[goaded]

Amazing, isn't it?

[NewtoTheSouth]

It's a national trend.

[goaded]

@NewtoTheSouth crazy muslim socialist dictators? I hope so!

[NewtoTheSouth]

No, crime rates. Here is a New York Times article that details it: www.nytimes.com/.../...bi-crime-rate-declines.html

[goaded]

@NewtoTheSouth "The decline in crime predates Mr. Trump’s current term in office."

[Friendlybro79]

New Yorker here! Yes I do know.

[purplepoppy]

I've just looked at last year's statistics for the USA and NY is far from the most dangerous place https://www.security.org/resources/most-dangerous-cities/

Seems to me it's reputation is more down to Hollywood than facts

[MrChinaski]

Nah, it just cleaned up in the 1990s..

[goaded]

@MrChinaski The whole country did. Probably because of a new generation who hadn't been poisoned by lead in the air all their lives. Leaded fuel was banned in the early 1970's.

[katiesmuff]

I think that is fantastic, lets hope that trend spreads throughout the country.

[NewtoTheSouth]

It is a national trend. The poster is trying to deceive you by suggesting it a phenomena unique to NYC. Here is a New York Times article that describes the national decline in crime rates:

www.nytimes.com/.../...bi-crime-rate-declines.html

[katiesmuff]

@NewtoTheSouth Well then I guess my wish was granted!

[goaded]

@NewtoTheSouth "President Trump Takes Credit for Steep Crime Rate Declines... The president said that “every single number” in the report was the lowest in recorded history, which is not the case."

[katiesmuff]

Well we understand that anytime his lips begin to flap a lie of some sort is about to come.

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

The thing about those types of statistics regardless if its NYC or not is that is deceiving and meant for political propaganda.

For ex. Gas prices are currently 4 Dollars plus but if it goes down to 3.25 a gallon next month, some will be happy saying prices are now reasonable but the reality is that's still damn too high for a gallon of gas just not as high as 4 plus.

NYC just like all major cities have a lot of crime, so don't propaganda fool you.

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

* let

[Just_Ken]

I agree completely. Its why statistics and surveys linked to politics should always be ignored.

[itss_lily]

he didn't say NYC didn't have a lot crime, he just said it's at a historic low, which is a comparison

[itss_lily]

@Just_Ken not ignored. it requires a case-by-case analysis

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

@itss_lily: "Historic lows" means ish when robbery, property crimes, shootings, rapes and physical attacks still happen a lot.

If you compare switzerland very low crime rates to NYC's crime rates NYC will seem like hell's playground of devils.

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

* hell

[goaded]

You don't get to ignore statistics just because you don't like them.

The Center for American Progress (CAP) is an American public policy research and advocacy organization which presents a liberal viewpoint on economic and social issues. CAP is headquartered in Washington, D. C.

In October 2016, The Intercept reported that United Arab Emirates Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba praised "a CAP report released [in October 2016] that advocates for continued cooperation with Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates."

In January 2019, two CAP staffers were fired after an investigation concerning the leaking of an internal email exchange involving discussions over the phrasing of CAP's response to the murder of The Washington Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi. CAP released a statement noting that while investigating the leaks, this was not the cause for the firings.

Open government groups have criticized the center's failure to disclose its contributors, particularly because it was so influential to the Obama administration. CAP's website states that corporate donors are not allowed to remain anonymous. Nathan Robinson, writing in 2018 for Current Affairs wrote that CAP "continues to conceal the identities of many of its largest donors." He also criticized CAP for receiving "shady donations" and for a grant of $200,000 to the American Enterprise Institute in 2018.

CAP has received significant funding from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, a pro-austerity think tank associated with billionaire investment banker Peter G. Peterson.

Media writers criticized CAP for what they saw as censorship of reasonable comments critical of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and other policies. Based on leaked emails, columnist Glenn Greenwald, for example, wrote that CAP had deleted references to Israeli settlement policies in reports by their staffers.

[Just_Ken]

Greenwald and others also criticized CAP for hosting a meeting with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At the same time, Netanyahu was hostile to the Obama Administration. Greenwald described CAP's positions as "servitude to AIPAC and pandering to Netanyahu." Eighteen organizations and over one hundred academics signed an open letter, circulated by Jewish Voice for Peace and the Arab American Institute, against the meeting. 26,300 people signed a petition opposing the meeting.

After the release of the Podesta emails, the Center for American Progress was criticized for emails sent between John Halpin, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, and Jennifer Palmieri, a Hillary Clinton campaign team member. The Washington Post characterized the comments as "joking"; Kellyanne Conway and others called them anti-Catholic attacks.

[Just_Ken]

In February 2020, The New York Times reported that the center had removed reporting of New York City police surveillance of Muslim communities from a 2015 report, allegedly out of deference to Michael Bloomberg, who had given the center grants worth $1.5 million. Yasmine Taeb, an author of the report, said that they were instructed to remove the chapter or make dramatic revisions, alleging this was "because of how it was going to be perceived by Mayor Bloomberg." CAP officials disputed her account, characterizing the changes as editorial decisions: detailed discussion of NYC policing was off-topic because the report had been "commissioned to examine right-wing groups targeting Muslims with explicit bigotry and conspiracy theories." Bloomberg told The New York Times reporters he was unaware of any such dispute at CAP; in 2017, he contributed an additional $400,000

[Just_Ken]

In April 2018, BuzzFeed News reported that female employees of CAP had complained of sexual harassment by CAP employee Benton Strong to human resources and management. Two anonymous employees alleged retaliation for reporting Strong's behavior, one of them including her allegations in an exit memo when leaving CAP. However, CAP maintains that no retaliation occurred, and an internal investigation concluded the same. In response to the first complaint, Strong received a warning from CAP management. After the second complaint, he was suspended for three days without pay. He was already resigning to take up a position elsewhere, and these three days coincided with the final three days of his employment with CAP.

After the publication of the BuzzFeed story, CAP president Neera Tanden unintentionally used the first name of one of the anonymous women during an all-staff meeting to address their handling of the sexual harassment allegations

[Just_Ken]

The Center for American Progress is a 501(c)(3) organization under the US Internal Revenue Code. In 2014, CAP received $45 million from a variety of sources, including individuals, foundations, labor unions, and corporations. From 2003 to 2007, CAP received about $15 million in grants from 58 foundations. Major individual donors include George Soros, Peter Lewis, Steve Bing, and Herb and Marion Sandler. The center receives undisclosed sums from corporate donors. In December 2013, the organization released a list of its corporate donors, which include Walmart, CitiGroup, Wells Fargo, defense contractor Northrop Grumman, America's Health Insurance Plans, and Eli Lilly and Company.

In 2015, CAP released a partial list of its donors, which included 28 anonymous donors accounting for at least $5 million in contributions. Named donors included the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, each giving between $500,000 and $999,999. CAP's top donors include Walmart and Citigroup, each of which has given between $100,000 and $499,000. Other large CAP donors include Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Google, Time Warner, and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

[Just_Ken]

@goaded thats where your statistics come from

[goaded]

@Just_Ken AI;DR Are the statistics wrong? They come from the CDC.

[Just_Ken]

The CDC and FBI tracking consistently show that large central metro counties record higher absolute firearm homicide rates per 100,000 residents than smaller suburban or rural towns

[goaded]

@Just_Ken What's an "absolute firearm homicide rate"? Homicides per 100,000 population is just called the homicide rate, and nobody's just talking about firearm homicides,

[Just_Ken]

Ask the CDC...

[goaded]

@Just_Ken Why don't you show me a cdc link? Could it be because you're talking rubbish?

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

@goaded:

You mean to tell me with these official stats not counting crimes that weren't reported that this is a safe city?

Yeah, its not as horrific as other cities in the U. S. but NYC isn't a safe city and statistics don't necessarily tell the whole truth because often times people don't even report when a crime is committed against them i. e. purse snatching or a random physical attack out in the streets.

If you're going to talk about safe city then put a city that hardly has any crime in it but NYC is definitely isn't it.

abc7ny.com/.../

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

And keep in mind this is from June to August only.

[goaded]

New York has different definitions for certain crimes (not murder, though), that's how Trump was only found liable in court for sexual assault and not rape, for example.

"Safest" is a relative term, "safe" is absolute, and not what's being claimed. No city in the world is absolutely safe.

There are many US cities that are a lot less safe than NYC. 126 of them had a higher murder rate in 2024(?), and NYC's murder rate has dropped since then. Have the other cites' rates dropped as much or more? Time will tell.
en.wikipedia.org/.../List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

NYC isn't even the most dangerous city in New York state.

[goaded]

And keep in mind ""Historic Summer Part of Eight-Month Stretch of Fewest Shooting Incidents, Shooting Victims, and Murders in Recorded History". That's January to August, then.

Mamdani became mayor in January 2026. (To be fair, it's most reasonable to take credit only for the most recent few months because nothing changes on day one.)

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

Your definition of safe is different from mine.

Safe cities hardly have any murders, shootings, rapes and purse snatching.

Bend Oregon is what I consider a safe city, not a place that has over 200 shootings and 60 plus murders within 3 months period as NYC.

[goaded]

Really? A city with a population 1/80th that of NYC is safer? Amazing!

It's amazingly safe murder rate is only three to four times higher than London.

[Hispanic-Cool-Guy]

Yeah it is. Big cities aren't safe. People who say such is because they haven't been a victim of a crime especially a violent one yet nor their family number.

[goaded]

Isn't that the same as people in small cities or towns? A couple of murders a year is not great. The occasional mass shooting, like in 2022 in Bend, is not great.

I wonder if you really comprehend the scale of somewhere like New York or London.

For example, this paper lists all 12 deadly shootings in London in 2024. The two closest to each other were a half hour walk, and several weeks, apart. How afraid should your average Londoner be? The 8 million of them, spread over six hundred square miles.
www.mylondon.news/.../new-map-shows-every-fatal-30701715

There are three or four fatal stabbings a month, again spread over six hundred square miles and 8 million people.

[AviatorTom]

Of course, when the Mayor instructs NYPD to stop reporting what he views as petty crimes (shoplifting, petty theft, assault, ...), the crime numbers are gonna look good.

[goaded]

How do you under-report murder?

[AviatorTom]

@goaded You categorize it as something else.

[goaded]

Impossible. One body = one murder.

[AviatorTom]

@goaded A dead body does not indicate murder. Could be an unknown cause of death, suicide, or a whole slew of reasons other than murder.

[goaded]

Oh, you know what I mean.

[itss_lily]

lmao racists won't like this bc nyc is diverse and has lots of poc and immigrants

[slatyb]

Nice! Despite the doomsayers, the world is generally becoming less violent.

[Twodogs0525]

As an actual American, that's traveled to NYC several times, I have never considered it an "unsafe" place. If it's still unsafe, under new leadership, GREAT!

[Twodogs0525]

I also have to add, is your new found "safest summer since 1900" under an admitted socialist mayor, your way of admitting you want the US to join your shit show in the EU?

[Twodogs0525]

I meant "still safe under new leadership".

[jamesgoldman]

Sure with the mayor who wants the 9/11 memorial dedicated to the 'members of the brotherhood doing brotherhood things' rather than the innocents

It's funny how NY is learning what London has learned from Khan

[Laulenke]

I don’t know about that just in the last few days there’s been a couple of major stabbings where people have died and one guy tried stabbing the police on the Brooklin bridge and they dhot him to death

[goaded]

You do understand that "safest" doesn't mean absolutely free of danger?

[TonyMetal___1986]

Good 👍🏻
Thanks to the fellow officers's hard work there for making their city a safe place for it's citizens...

[goaded]

Did the police force change over the last couple of years?

[TonyMetal___1986]

I don't know

[MrChinaski]

While the NYPD's butchery of the English language walks the streets unchecked.

[goaded]

Drink up your cworfee!

[exitseven]

Ask Erin Piancenti who was stabbed to death in Times Sq by a crazy women.

[Danzigdawson]

@exitseven "Fewest murders": not "zero murders", idiot.

[itss_lily]

you dont understand that difference between data vs one example. color me shocked🤦🏻‍♀️

[exitseven]

@Danzigdawson yes, it is a nationwide phenomenon.

[goaded]

What is? Erin Piancenti being stabbed to death in Times Sq?

[exitseven]

@goaded No that the murder rate across the whole country has gone down. Mostly due to a law and order president.

[Danzigdawson]

@exitseven How do you explain that the murder and crime rate has gone down in the largest and most anti-trump city in the US, a delirious satanic-stalinist-socialist-muslim at its helm, not having been one of the crime-ridden democrat cities "made safe" by trump's illegal National Guard deployment a year ago? Isn't crime and chaos supposed to skyrocket in such a catastrophic situation?

Think about it:
The mayor is not white...
He is not a conservative...
He is not a christian...
And he's a "socialist"...

Why is there no bitter trench warfare ongoing in this communist hellhole untouched by trump?

[exitseven]

@Danzigdawson Like I said, it is a nationwide trend. However in New York it could be that a lot of the gang bangers have already killed each other.

[Danzigdawson]

@exitseven No, no: I clearly remember you panicking about the prospect that New York would become a crime-ridden socialist hellhole when Mamdani was elected.

The orange pedophile blob did not send the National Guard there. "Crime" was left untouched by His Travesty donnie johnny the turd.

So... How is this possible?

[Saddlebread]

I will admit not reading the whole report so the hyper link might answer my question. Do they index this per capital?

[goaded]

Of course. NYC is the most populous city in the US, in terms of absolute numbers it's obviously going to have more murders than a "city" 100x smaller.

[Shiprex]

That is a great stat. Maybe the rest of America can see if it can improve on that.

[Iron_Man]

Does that mean you’re gonna move to New York City

[goaded]

It's nice to visit, but there's no way I'm going to set foot in Trump's America.

Also, even London is safer than NYC.

[Ariesman81Nshiiit]

Hmmm... looks like ICE was doing a good thing.
