Is this because of the pandemic? New York is not a place I would like to visit during this time. A lot of social problems. Seems to be getting worse by the day.

All the cities were better 10 years ago. Roughly 14 years ago, cities began a steep decline and it never really got better. It probably never will get better. The country is different now. Just enjoy the decline, try not to stress, and make plans for your grandchildren to get out.
