@Guardian45 Not a professional, if that’s what you mean. But I have taken professional training classes, and have been shooting for over a decade now. The people I have given lessons to are usually total noobs and I mostly focus on safety and handling then once they are comfortable work them up from a.22 to a 12 gauge.

@Guardian45 Ooo, crash course time. This is fun lol. Okay, so I’ll define a few terms first.

Caliber = The diameter of the projectile in inches. (ie. 50 caliber is a half inch diameter bullet)

Bore = This is an older term not often used in modern firearms, it’s left over from the days of black powder. The number signifies the number of lead spheres taken from a single pound. So a 4 bore rifle would use rounds with the diameter of a lead sphere weighing ¼ a pound of lead. The larger the number, the more spheres, the smaller the diameter. (Only defining this term, because it’s the easiest way to explain what a gauge is.)

Gauge = same measurement as Bore but used in shotguns rather than rifles.

So.22 is short for.22 long rifle (.22lr) which is a specific 22 caliber cartridge. It’s a little bitty rimfire guy, mostly used for plinking (target shooting) and varmints (rats, rabbits, squirrels, and other small game) not generally considered practical for home defense but it will still kill someone, just not always as quickly as you might need it to. They are small rounds, that frequently come in boxes of 100 or 500 and they don’t have much kick. It’s what Boy Scouts use in summer camps, and a decent place to start with any new shooter.

12 gauge. Is a common shotgun cartridge. Can be packed with anything from little bitty bird shot (a whole bunch of little pellets, designed for hunting birds) to Buck (fewer number of larger pellets, designed for hunting deer) or slugs (one big ass projectile.) much larger cartridge than the.22, with much more kick. Takes more control and more experience to handle properly and safely.

@Guardian45 Fair enough lol. Probably better than I didn’t go into some of the weirder ammo types like 45-70, 30-06, or 762x39. Or even bother with the difference with rim fire, center fire, and the ever elusive pin fire.

@Guardian45 The chemistry can get pretty complicated too. But maybe that’s just because I’m a biologist, not a chemist lol. Different powder types for different barrel lengths and all that. If it burns too fast you can blow up your gun. If it burns to slow you could have flames shooting out the barrel and an inaccurate shot.
