What's a basic skill you've taught?

In my junior year of high school, there was an event called "tie day" in which men were to wear ties.

In English class, only me, and two other guys wore ties, so my English teacher asked all three of us to come up, and show everyone how to tie a necktie.

Luckily, unlike the two other guys, I really did put my tie together myself, and I was confident when I was called first to show the class how to put on a tie.

I had a girl come up and the teacher asked me to show her, and while she was a bit rough at first, I calmly walked her through it, and got applause from the class of about 30 people. I was then asked to do it myself, and despite my introverted nature, I was confident.

I set the tie on my neck, with the wide side on my right, the narrow side on my left, I slowly wrapped the wide side around my narrow side, and pulled it over into the knot I created.

I distinctly remember one fellow student saying "BOOM!" As I tightened the tie up, and put my collar around it, as the class clapped for me🥰🥰

As an electrician, i’ve taught dozens of apprentices not just the fundamentals of electrical work, but the fundamentals of life. In the earliest days of apprenticing, families essentially traded their sons that boys and young men could learn useful and marketable trades. They also lived with their surrogate families if there was a great distance between them. So they learned fundamental life skills as well. I knew that going through the apprenticeship myself, but i was a grown man. It never occurred to me that some of my younger apprentices might involve me in their life choices outside of work. Especially since i never had kids of my own, that has touched me deeply every time. One kid in particular knew i was practicing sobriety and called me for a ride home when he was drunk. During the drive he expressed to me his concerns about maybe having a drinking problem. I told him if he was still worried about it when he woke up the next day to call me. He didn’t. But he did pull me to the side the next Monday and ask for help. I started taking him to meetings and introduced him to a couple of potential sponsors. As far as i know, he stayed off the sauce, graduated from the apprenticeship and took over his dad’s company. He’s probably doing better than me right now! Ell oh ell!

Good job. I never learned how to tie a necktie.

I taught my kids how to do an oil change and change a flat tire and jumpstart a dead battery.
