Honestly, it depends on a few factors. Debt in itself isn't a dealbreaker for me, but I'd want to know more about the context and their approach to handling it.

Type of Debt: Is it student loans, credit card debt, medical bills, or something else? Some types of debt are more understandable and manageable than others.

Amount of Debt: How much debt are we talking about? A small, manageable amount might not be a big deal, but a huge debt could affect both of our financial futures.

Reason for Debt: Why did they incur the debt? Was it due to unforeseen circumstances, like medical emergencies or necessary education, or was it from irresponsible spending?

Attitude Towards Debt: Are they actively working to pay it off, or are they ignoring it and letting it grow?

Financial Compatibility: Do we have similar financial goals and attitudes?

If my partner was open and honest about their debt and had a solid plan to pay it off, I'd be more inclined to move forward. If they were reckless or indifferent about it, that might be a red flag for me.

Never marry someone with non asset backed debt , because you will inherit it , and it will become your debt also , if you were planning to marry this person ( with debt ) work on a plan to get them out of debt , prior to your marriage.

A mortgage is okey for example , or an investment loan , so long as the investment deal is rock solid ETFs or the like , when I say a mortgage is okey , this assumes a genuine great LVR on the property.

Credit card debt , car loans , higher purchase agreements , pawn shops , loan sharks = NO Way , also they would need to understand that they must change their ways.

Other than the $92K+ that the feds owe on "our behalf"?

If the debt is for education or investment property that is turning an income, I would be a lot more forgiving: it shows that she is thinking in the long term. I would not treat maxed charge cards or overly high car loans with such delicacy, however. Use the Bohemian Easy Payment Plan: save your money, pay 100% down and have no monthly payments. (Yes, I'm a Bohemian). The only "monthly payment" we have is our charge card which we pay in full each month.

Sure, as long as it’s not like 10k in credit card debt or something. If they’re poor, that’s fine. But if they’re financially irresponsible and have a pattern with credit card debt then that’s an issue.

Nah I don't believe in buying things you cannot afford so getting with someone with debt would probably start a lot of fights. Unless it's debt from buying a house or cheap car then maybe

  • Ah, the age-old question of love and finance dancing a tango! 💃🕺In my world of twisting and turning through the maze of relationships, I've seen that marrying someone with debt isn't a simple yes or no question. It's like asking if you'd still enjoy your favorite ice cream if it melted a bit—of course, there's a twist, but it doesn't change the essence.

When love is in the air, and wedding bells are ringing, debt can seem like just another guest at the party. What matters is not the debt itself but how you both handle it. Communication, oh sweet communication, becomes your best dance partner here. Discussing how to tackle that debt together, setting financial goals, and being each other's cheerleader through thick and thin can actually strengthen your bond.

Remember, it's not the debt but the approach to it that can be a red flag or a green light. So, if your heart is doing the cha-cha every time you're with your partner, and you're both ready to face those financial challenges head-on, why let a little debt step on your dance floor? 💑💰

Everyone has debt, others to find someone totally debt-free.

So long as the debt is reasonable and manageable, not a problem.

Absolutely not. I planned my life to be financially comfortable and have been able to take early retirement.

I made decisions and sacrifices and are not going to attach myself to someone with a huge debt.

I have hella debt so yes I would but it also depends what the debt was for. My debt is school. If its debt for "stupid" lifestyle purchases then id be hesitant about what the kind of person is

No. As someone in debt I wouldn’t because why would I add the burden of 2 debts. And if I was financially stable then still no because you shouldn’t put yourself in debt you can’t handle. I’m learning the hard way.

it depends on how much debt, like they are making car payments, house payments stuff like that is fine.
Broke, 6 credit cards maxed out, has a hard time making the rent payments probably not so much.

No, I broke up with a girl largely because she had 120,000 in student loan debt and was desperately looking to find a man so she can be a housewife.

It depends why they're in debt if it's from high dollar shopping trips no way I get if someone's in debt for things like paying off hospital bills or new eyeglasses etc. I can overlook that.

Depends on how much and why. If it's something stupid like a college debt or huge car debt, nah. A mortgage is fine though.

No I won’t marry someone who is debt.
On the other hand, a debt could be a stagnant in business and if there are ways to revive the business if the products are available, I will help to revive the business and marry the person

Debt that is being paid back timely, not normally an issue.

Runs credit cards to the max and then makes minimum payments, huge red flag.
