What are the skills that you learned yourself?

For me, I learned dancing, singing (this needs more improvement), cooking, swimming by myself.

I learnt writing (poetry, song lyrics, stories, essays, novels, etc) by myself too and my progress in this field is growing rapidly than in any other field and my scope as a writer (especially poet and lyricist) is extremely high.

The list for me is very long - though singing is NOT on that list, as my singing voice has been compared to a war crime. I grew up lower-middle class - we always had food and utilities, but often had little if anything for "extras." I was able to play a couple of sports because the fees were low enough, but even that was sometimes a bit of a stretch for my parents at the time.

Certainly, there were no extra classes or tutoring or any of that - I had the public library. There was no publicly-accessible Internet when I was a teen - it technically existed, but only to connect large universities to government offices and large corporations like IBM or Lockheed. And when I graduated high school, a cell phone looked like this:

And it cost several hundred 1980s dollars a month for service PLUS per-minute call time charges PLUS long-distance charges - and the battery had 6 hours of stand-by time and 20 minutes of call time. Needless to say, if you weren't a big CEO, a celebrity, a major investor, or a drug dealer, you didn't have one of these back then - they mostly only worked in major cities as well.

So... being poor, having no Internet and wanting to buy things and have things and do things, my only real choice was to teach myself things and to work to earn my own money, so that's what I did. I *always* had some kind of a job to earn money, starting from about 8 years old, and I was always learning things. When someone gave me an old stereo with some broken connections, I found a book about soldering, I bought a soldering iron and solder, and I learned to fix it. When my bike broke, I learned to take it apart and figure out how it worked and I fixed that too. When I wanted cable TV in my room for my hand-me-down 19" black & white TV, and my dad said "no way, I'm not paying for that!", I went to Radio Shack and bought the supplies, spliced in a splitter, and ran a cable through the floor of my room into the garage and connected it, and I had cable TV. I was 11.

I've had several different careers, and I taught myself how to do all of them. Once I learned how to learn, I had little patience with schools and teachers - I could figure a lot out on my own, but if I could find a book, I could learn the rest at my own pace and get the job done quickly, so that's what I did.

That accelerated once I had a computer and could go online - still a good ways pre-Internet. I was on local BBSs (bulletin board systems - basically you could dial in to someone else's computer, which often had a primitive feed of email and message boards, where it could be days before your message got across the country and a reply came back. I was one of the earliest users of AOL - so early that my login name was my first name with no numbers. I was always expanding my knowledge, learning to be an audio engineer, DJ, race car driver, IT manager, solar system designer, and whatever else I wanted or needed to know.

It's all so much easier today - everything is online, and YouTube in particular is an invaluable resource for learning how to do just about anything. Imagine having to ride your bike across town to the public library, looking up books in a card catalog, and then requesting inter-branch transfers of books just to learn something - that was my life as a kid!

Skills I taught myself?

Well, I have my own way of understanding things. I read different articles related to many subjects/topics especially understanding human dynamics which is tough as it is given how human nature is.

After reading I make my own observations and learning and if I think it is right then I make the change in my thought process and my personality myself, to make myself better. I don't need to discuss or talk to people in order to get their perspective. I make that decision on my own.

I don't know if this counts but this is what I do.

when i was like 13 i learned how to write like stories, poems and stuff. was actually pretty good at it. but now i suck and can't write anything remotely good for the life of me. also tried to teach myself languages before. forgot all of them though except for one. also tried learning survival skills like how to make a fire, how to make shelter, emergency medecine and stuff like that, totally forgot it also

the only stuff i still know how to do that i learned myself is drawing & makeup

Entirely on my own? Organizing and reading. (Oh, and copycatting @LavLavLuv... I learned that all on my own!)

I'm torn about whether to add writing but I'm going to. I did have teachers years ago and I did have mentor for almost 15 years. But much is my own. :)

Orienteering. I learned some in Scouts ajd had opportubities to join clubs, but I wanted to learn on my own. Still a lot to learn though, but I can't go a decent ways in uncharted territory. Useful in my remote region.
