I just found out I'm 20% African American but I'm white, is this surprising?

I've always thought I was the average Caucasian woman. Physically I don't have any visible black features within me. I'm white with pink skin tones, between wavy-straight light brown hair, honey eyes and high cheekbones.

I found a picture of my father's great-great grandmother. She was a black lady. I never knew this till recently. I did a genetic testing out of curiosity and yes it came out that I have 20% of the black genetic marker.

It's interesting that we never know what we're all made up that. So yeah I'm white but still carry some black genes within me. Is this surprising?

It can be surprising if you dont know about it but yes this is "normal", some white couples can even have a black baby cause of genes.

yeah now I know if my now husband (just got married) and I have a black baby that's the reason. I informed him about my past ancestors so he doesn't jump to conclusion. Though it turns out he also has an ancient ancestor from a long, time ago that was black too. The genetics specialist told me that even having a bit of the black gene is still enough for that gene to activate any moment, a throwback basically.

Needless to say it's crazy how genes work. It reminds me of the spinning wheel, where any combination can show up at random. That's interesting.

I think it took me by surprise because neither me nor my parents have obviously African American features. For instance coarse/culry hair, wide nose and full lips would be obvious but neither of us have those features.

yeah pretty much it. I always thought I was fully white, it seemed like it. I find it interesting that even though my great-great-great grandmother is already long dead, she still passed her gene. So now I'm aware there is a small chance I might have a black baby if the gene randomly activates. But that would be a throwback gene basically.

and my husband (white too) also has a bit of the black gene from his ancestors from so, long, long. One of his ancestors messed around with a black servant or slave woman. Wow. Genes are crazy. This means our black gene can activate any moment at random.

How will you continue to function with the normalcy that you know?

I'll get used to the idea that I'm mixed after all. There is a small chance that even a throwback can happen; this would be if my husband and I had a black baby. Now I we know the explanation to that if it happens.
