What are some ways to have better self discipline?

Well for me, I forget that the little things do add up even if it’s under $20

I plan I write it out and listen to podcasts, I just don’t bully stick with the plan. There’s somebody’s birthday or event to go to.

Start with what you can effect in your immediate vicinity and definite in a very specific way what is important to you in the broader sense of life. Then set yourself a schedule that you want yourself to have and everyday make small incremental steps to move in that direction.

Reward your successes and try not to be too hard on yourself when you fail; don't get caught up in the little things. Always return to your process.

Learn why it is you do what you do on a very foundational level. Social media, food, exercise, sleep, relationships, work, friends, where is it that you're getting your fixes and which of these things and in what way they are detrimental to your ability to stay disciplined in your goals.

Try and realize that the struggle is the reward.

It also helps me personally, when I have an basic understanding of how my brain rewards me and what it causes me to seek things out on a neurological level. Maybe listen to Andrew Hubermans podcast on Dopamine; it's really interesting.

I'm learning from all the comments because i need more discipline. Personally i think the best way to have better self discipline is to stop procrastinating. If i wake up to my alarm clock i should force myself out of bed, right then. Get ready, maybe fix lunch or breakfast or both if i have time. Then i should rush out of the house to be early and not late.

Riding my bike, taking a walk, learning Spanish, doing research, reading a book and maintaining my car are all things that i think about and procrastinate. But as soon as i think about it i should just do it and not wait around.

Well, in my case, I do understand it the difference between need and want. Trust me, my bills come first and then everything afterwards. I do understand the situation of living in an unsafe living environment for the majority of my life. I’ve been here, but it is home.

My problem stems from and did everything I was supposed to. I don’t have any children yet why not and especially if it’s under $20.

Lol many a bike but not a kid but a good bike is at least 50 and up. A kid would some sleepless nights. Time consuming looking for good partner for a husband. Etc.

Honestly it seems like a lot of people with no discipline are the people who don’t actually understand the definition of “need”


It might not seem like much but your use of the word “need” makes a big difference.


Here’s two sentences with one word changed.
“I need perfume”
“I want perfume”
The first one makes the perfume sound a lot more important an therefore a much more important expense thus your more likely to buy it.


Now how often do you think you say you “need” something unimportant. How often do you think the careless use of the word “need” has caused you to buy something you really shouldn’t have?


Do you know how often I say I need something in a year? About 6 or 7 times. Instead If I think something is interesting I would say “this would be nice” and If something is useful I would say “It would be useful” but I don’t say I need it. When I say I need something you know that something has happened or will happen soon if something isn’t done about it. When I say I need something people don’t ask questions because they know the moment that word pops out of my mouth I’m bordering desperation.

I happen to live in a place that is falling apart and can get pretty dangerous so yeah I do sometimes need some things in order to not die.
I spent 2 and a half years living on microwaved foods because I had nothing else to use. I only said I NEEDED a oven or barbecue one time and that was because 2 and a half years of nothing but microwavables can I have a profound impact on both your psychological health, and your physical health. So yeah.

Learn to use the word "No." I know it's hard, but it really helps a lot. And it can be very empowering. (I use it when I see desserts in the grocery store.)

You need to train your mind to be disciplined. Even if you develop the good habits unless you train your mind to follow them it will be tough for you to stay disciplined in the long run.

Luck does play a role in life. I've never made very good wage. But I've had relatively good health and I've managed to invest 15% of my pretax income since I was 25. And with a God return over 20+ years. I've managed to achieve a portfolio in the high six figures. I'm not rich. But if all continues on this pace I should be able to retire with over a million. And I'll be the first in my family.
You're ONLY 28 hun. I probably only had 20k or so when I was younger age. Just keep plugging away girl.
