Why do people ask others questions when they don't want an answer?

A lot of times some people don’t ask questions looking for a variety of opinions or viewpoints, their questions are crafted to promote their own point of view. They really don’t care what you think. I can think of a few users off the top of my head who routinely do this. Sometimes I can tell by the way a question is worded, or by the narrative after the question, that it’s a bait question and all user wants to do is shove an opinion down everyone’s throat. Or troll. That’s a shame because those questions overshadow some pretty good ones. Like some parents are won't to say, “we just can’t have nice things.”

Some people just want people to repeat/agree whatever thoughts/views the Question Asker has on certain things of about themselves. So, when others say something else than what the question asker wanted, they get annoyed or in some cases the question asker just wants to rant. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Apart from the troll scenarios SaoirseS mentioned, some people are so unstable that they only want to read validation of their feelings, against all better judgment. For example „Yes, it’s perfectly fine to live with a drug dealing bum that beats you, because you luuurrve him sooo much!“ 🙄

they don't want an answer that conflicts with their established viewpoint. they just want agreement to feel good, eventhough their 'state' is messed up, which is why they ask.

They want to be heard and to be understood and you to agree with them or you're an enemy.

It is because they are not seeking answers; they are conveying their predetermined opinions, by judiciously wording them as questions.

Many times on here, and often in life, people look for confirmation for their own beliefs rather than other viewpoints.

Like someone will ask a question about whether or not they should go on a date with someone that is already taken? And if you answer opposite of what the asked wants to hear , you are wrong completely, like your opinion is non existent, they only want to here answers that line up with what they are already thinking
