What is something about adulthood that noone prepared you for?

I think my parents were great preparers, but here's the rub, as much as they did by example, I was able to ignore because I had a financially secure childhood and youth, and got myself into trouble when finally on my own. They were savers and penny pinchers. However, as I was divorced and ill, I lost years of doing well financially, so I'll be working until I can't, most likely, to make up for lost years.

It's not like they SAID, do this. They taught by example. I wish they'd have been more direct. I'm trying to do that with my son who's a young adult. I hope he realizes that my penny pinching was and is a necessity. He buys at thrifts and doesn't have a car. I've just paid off my $2800 Civic c. 2006 after a year and a half. My house is paid for. And I'm working off pandemic debt. But I think of my parents all the time and know what I have to do. Hard to do on three part time jobs and a small pension. But I'm working toward it.

Financial savvy and responsibility is the toughest thing. I hope there are "LIFE SKILLS" like this taught in high schools. Mandatory. So important.

When I was a child work was easy and effortless, but I was much smarter than my classmates so I did not struggle the way they did. Now anything I try to do to make money begins with a struggle. And when I was a child, being religious was easy but now its like I have to seek God before I can feel God.

Most of it, the demons, the psychopaths we meet in our lives, the routines, the drinking, the depression, the partner's demons, that no matter how much i do it's never enough for anyone, the mother in law is never happy about anything and no one told me shit about it, buying a big house is not enough and no one prepared me that no matter what i do nor say will ever be right nor enough.

That the vast bulk of adult humanity: lacks the intelligence to think sufficiently abstractly. lives in fear causing them to make decisions for short-term situations that are bad in the long term. lives without much empathy. is selfish and self-centered instead of thinking what is best for all of us - now and for the future.
