Why do so many people hate LEGAL immigration?

I've helped more than a few people immigrate to the USA, and it's not easy. But they all had to go through criminal background checks and medical checks. Why are so many on the left apposed to common sense rules? Do you really want drugs and drug dealers crossing the border? Do you want terrorists crossing the border? Why not just win the vote by legal means? Democrats used to be able to come up with ideas and get votes, but now they've all turned to shady means.

Those on the left generally AREN'T opposed to common sense rules; they're opposed to the way the system is currently set up. If you've helped people get in legally, then you should know, it's awful: waiting a decade and paying tens of thousands of dollars for a roll of the dice. The country is in desperate need of immigration reform.

Those on the left who oppose it are the elected politicians- ironically, the one group that can actually FIX the problem- because it gives them the incredibly useful political club to beat their opponents with.

It depends. Some people fear immigrants are "taking their jobs" - which can be true in the short term but isn't in the long term. . Some are concerned about changes in culture - they like the culture as it is because its familiar to them. Some is pure racism.

your title seemed opposite of your clarification. you mean why do people hate "the process of immigration" in contrast to the idea of welcoming immigrants. i doubt people hate immigration.
