Would you move to a bad area if the rent was cheap?

Question

I’ve been looking at apartments and I found one I loved. It’s a really nice studio apartment for $680 a month. I finally decided to drive by and look at the building and it was nothing like what was being advertised. It’s 5 minutes away from downtown which is nice and it’s in a historic area. However, the exterior of the building looks awful and the area is scary looking… the ad said it has gated parking and good security which is nice but seeing it in person was a let down… the area around it is crime ridden and there are lots of homeless people around. I did notice that the doors remained locked so that’s good but I don't know If I want to take the chance…. But it’s such a good price and it has everything I want on the inside. It’s just awful on the outside.

True story : Once I was followed by a guy, very close, It was night, I waited for him to pass by me and followed him right exact way, near his neck. The same way he followed me minutes earlier.

These people gotta know, I am not a victim, just because I have a vagina and he is not a predator just because he’s got a penis. So, he mustn’t mess with wrong people and better not mess with anyone at all.

There was also one more guy on subway, he touched me and looked at me, I smiled at him and waved him to sign to lean closer to me, then I grabbed his shirt and whispered to him gently, that he’d better get off the train right now of I am taking him to the police on the next station. He said sorry and left, I was younger than 18 in both occasions.

I don’r act that way anymore, I learned to control my impulses but I am the last person anyone wants to mess with.

If it is a dangerous area then NO it isn't worth the risk to me.

However not all ugly areas are dangerous, if you really like the apartment, I would see if you can find any statistics or anything about the neighborhood to confirm it has high crime before you eliminate it. JMO!

When something is "such a good price," especially now, there's a reason for it. The entire point of living in dense housing in or near cities is to be within walking distance of places you'll go on a daily basis, but if it's unsafe to venture beyond the parking lot, then what's the point?

If I were living somewhere like you describe, I'd be making use of my CHL every time I walk out the door, and if this is a state or city with a bad track record of litigating against self defense (like Austin), then it would be a non-starter.

It’s all about safety & security & if I were renting I rather pay more to live in a nicer area than pay less & always have to look over my shoulder & guard my vehicle 24/7. Go down to your local police department & talk to someone about safe areas to live in.

I wouldn’t risk it but I come from a pretty sheltered life and I have heard it’s hard to find good housing at a reasonable price so it really depends on what your other options are. Do you feel really unsafe walking around the neighborhood? In my opinion that’s a bad sign if you do.

It depends I guess... I don't like areas that are completely run down but I don't need a fancy area either. If there's a lot of crime then I'd avoid it. Don't wanna worry every time I'm out in the dark by myself.

Currently my family isn't living in the nicest area but it's my too bad. There are some drug dealers and prostitutes running around our streets but they leave you alone so I'm not feeling unsafe just because of them. Don't hear much about theft, violence, rape, murder and those things... That would scare me away

What I’ve noticed from searching for apartments is safety costs more.

My old roommate and I gave up because we didn’t want to pay 1600 for a basic ugly ass apartment in a safe neighborhood and chose to just live on base.

I personally just wouldn’t risk it… especially if living alone.

I would go by what your heart follows you to do. If it's a bad area, you may want to think this one over, some homeless people can be really be bad people.

piece of advice if you're in a bad area expect the tenants above you or below you or next to you to be drug dealers and blast loud music and be complete filthy pigs with the way they live and expect the dumpster to be swamped up to the top with garbage everyday and even overflowing on the ground and expect the place inside to have a cosmetic makeover while everything underneath is old obsolete run down shit that constantly breaks and needs repairs and expect mice or rats and flies and ants and cockroaches inside your apartment and expect the property management to be complete assholes who will make your life a living hell especially if you complain about the piss poor living conditions in that place and expect them to not renew your lease after 1 year and expect them to try and swindle you out of your security deposit

yeah i would but i already kinda do lol so it's different. i don't advise it for everyone tho and just know not all bad areas are actually bad you just gotta be aware

like don't walk with phone/airpods out, don't talk to sketchy strangers on the street, don't be alone out at night, and look like you know where you're going. get pepper spray and secure your place. like get one of those door stopper things that stand

I live in average neighborhood, it’s not super expensive but relatively safe, though my car did get broken into last summer. I’m always careful not to go to inexpensive with apartments because those do tend to be in more dangerous neighborhoods. So no I wouldn’t do that.

I've lived in some very rough neighborhoods in the past, because I couldn't afford rent anywhere else, and there are obviously advantages and disadvantages in doing so.

The reason it looks like that is because they have to overcompensate for bad location. Real estate is ALL about neighborhood and location.

A house in a bad neighborhood that has the most expensive renovations on the planet will struggle to sell but the house in the quiet, crime-free, nuclear family oriented neighborhood that hasn’t been updated in 50 years will sell 10 times faster.

I wouldn't do it if you don't feel comfortable there. Last year I decided not to buy a reasonably-priced property because it was near a wooded area where homeless camp out.

No. Having lived in a bad area, seen plenty of fights from my windows, had all sorts of antisocial behaviour and all hours, I would not wany to live there, especially now i have two young kids. I'd pay a little more for less mental stress

Have before. Bunch of disgusting idiots lived there and guns shots in the hallways and outside was common and police and fire rescue will daily be there since it was 7 buildings all in one super big lot.

I've done it before. Not only was the area bad but the place looks like it was held together by shoestring, wasn't really all that cheap either all things considered.

Inside looks good. “Scary looking” could be bias. You can look up neighborhoods for crime rates. See what it is compared to others.
