Can you tell when someone is staring at you vs spacing out and just looking in your direction?

I'll admit that sometimes i get lost in thought and start spacing out a bit and i just happen to be looking in someones direction. im not actually looking at them though. And of course when i come to i look away. don't want to be rude lol.
