Because no woman wants to admit she's fat so they walk around the issue as much as possible with frilly little words that are not fat. So after a guy meets enough women that say they are thick and then when he meets her it's apparent she's really just fat. We realize, "oh OK, you're one of these women who still hasn't come to accept you're really just fat yet". And after enough times guys just instinctively know when a woman says "thick" there's very high probability she's just fat.

perhaps because thick is a fairly subjective term. plenty of people wouldn't think the girl in the second pic is NOT thick. obviously plenty would think the girl in the first pic is NOT thick.
it's really a matter of personal perspective/opinion.

They aren't the same but thick is really somewhere in the middle of the two pics you posted. The second girl is a bit too thin to be thick. Maybe like 10 more pounds on her body

In Dutch thick means "dik" and fat means "vet". We call people "dik" when they're fat. So I think the word just lost it's definition.

because whatever new word you come up with to describe a "not skinny but not fat girl" will be stolen by fat girls to make themself feel better about being fat.

It's because the two terms are synonymous. The girl in the second photo isn't thicc/thick, she's skinny.
