Hockey. Decided to challenge myself in my 40s to get up off the couch after almost ten years and become an athlete again, but I really wanted to play hockey. That sport just feels like everything I’m about. But it’s well-known to require the heaviest commitments of time and money when you play as a kid. It’s a 10,000 hour game, for sure. So it’s been a true challenge trying to get myself up to speed with guys who might be past their prime years, but have playing since kindergarten and it’s all second nature for them. I was hoping for a bit more meteoric of a rise, haha, but honestly, I’m doing pretty well. Other guys I play with have said things like I’m “10x better than when I started”; I played with this old timer I knew when I started the other night, hadn’t seen him in two years, he said my skating has really improved since he saw me last; and another guy who can actually be kind of a dick and doesn’t usually throw compliments around said something like he’d see me do something out on the ice and be like “wait, that was STEVE? Damn, he’s really getting a lot better.” So I’m coming along I guess. If nothing else, I’d say 90%+ of the dudes in the league don’t want to fight with me, and just given my history watching 1980s/1990s hockey in my formative years, if I had a choice between guys thinking I was great or thinking I was tough, I think I’d go with tough😂 I only started watching because of the fights when I was little, 8 year old me was so enamored with all that, lmao.

But yeah, been grinding hard overall at this. In kind of a unique spot in my life where I can pour an uncommon amount of time into training, so I’m just trying to take advantage of that and treat this like my job. Get up, get out there, get better. Trying to be on the ice 4-6 days a week.

Most importantly…. I have the best hair in the league (which is simultaneously the WORST hair in regular non-hockey life🤣) and it’s not close….

Find me a better flow, I dare you. I’ll wait….

If you like to play sports, it’s really fun! I wish I started when I was your age! Young people I know who started around the same time as me are starting to get better than me, haha, I’m always envious that they’re still in that phase where they’re getting progressively stronger, whereas I’m mostly trying to maintain what I built when I was a young buck. I guess I’ve seen some growth with a few changes in my lifting routing recently, but the muscle comes a lot harder when you’re my age. It’s almost never too late to start playing recreational hockey, but I’d also recommend starting as soon as you can. But definitely try out ice skating sometime if you haven’t already, even that is fun…other than those first few times you go and you end up on your butt half the time😝
