Do you compost?

Started composting recently and wow! So much less waste going to landfill! We had to downsize our wheelie bin!

Yep! It makes a pretty big difference, doesn't it? 🙂 I'm lucky that where I live has three bins - one for trash, one for recycling, and a green one for compostables - and the local pickup takes it and composts it. We've had a "green bin" program now for over 25 years. I'm thankful for it. I also keep some compostable material for myself to put in my composter for the garden too. But between the recycling and composting bins it's amazing how little trash there is remaining! Hardly any at all.

I do. I'm considering chickens so I can recycle more - they're opportunistic omnivores so they'll eat meat scraps that don't compost well, and I have a worm farm already (although a recent hot spell killed the worms so I need some more 🤦)

Growing fruit trees and veg in homemade compost increases nutritional content rapidly. Just avoid using Roundup and other "weed" killers with glyphosate in - it's toxic to us and damages soil quality. You can suppress weed growth with a layer of wet newspaper or cardboard boxes flattened out. And they compost well too.

Yep. Natural is always best. 👍 Plant diversity can help prevent weed growth, but more importantly they help to keep pests at bay as well. Particularly native plants. Companion planting is really important as well. Mother Nature knows what she's doing. We just have to let her do it and not impose our will on Her.

A "weed" is just a plant growing where you don't want it. Dandelions can be used as a tea, the roots can be roasted and ground as a coffee substitute, the leaves are great in salads instead of rocket or lettuce and the flowers are tasty cooked in butter. They can also be used to help control blood pressure, headaches and a variety of other things we buy medication for - and who owns the patent for "Roundup" - Unilever, which also is the parent group manufacturing blood pressure and headache medications.

Yep. Longtime composter because I'm a longtime gardener. Yes, my trash diminished by about 30-40%. And compost becomes beautiful dirt! Who knew!!!

Landfill is a compost. You are unburdening by reusing, recycling, upcycling, and composting yourself.

We burn cardboard, separate out styrofoams and plastics for landfill, and repurpose chicken refuse.

Just don’t do like my relative and compost inside your house. For one, it can be dangerous if it gets anaerobic releasing methane. Two, it smells awful.

We have a small compost bin in the kitchen which has a filter to get rid of any smells and then when that's full we take it to the compost outside which is closed and we rotate it once a week. Then when it's ready in about 6 months ish we will use the compost for our garden ☺️

You can compost if you want, but it’s not necessary if you have enough acreage just to cast it across the landscape and it just breaks down naturally at the surface like in a garden. But it depends how much you generate.

We only have a small yard that we use quite often, it's compost, a rotating one so you don't have to dig around to mix it up.

We have the same on a stand. It generally doesn’t get used, we store it outside. You’re probably okay at your scale. Be careful.

I wanted to start so I have something good to add to my pepper plant soil, but my retard roommate sprayed Roundup all over the backyard and contaminated the dirt. Now I don't want to use anything as compost that has grown in that dirt fur fertilizing stuff I eat

Yes I have for a while, an older neighbour got me doing it for the small vegetable plot I had, that is now a large veg plot and I have the compost and a worm farm.

Yes starting with composting is best idea, then when hooked look at other options. It’s also that little ‘Go me’ when I know I am not just throwing things away that I can help use to grow stuff.

Yes. Kitchen waste composting is mandatory where I live an picked up curb-side weekly along with recycling.

We don't really have any outdoor waste, we throw the odd stick and leaves that have fallen off trees in there for dry waste.

Our outdoor waste like grass clippings can be taken to a central location for composting. No pick up.

The city does. We have bins for compostable materials and they come and pick them up every week. Also a bin for recycle items and then 1 for garbage. Reduced a lot going to the landfill.

We've been composting for years. Everything goes in it. We throw paper products, leaves, grass clipping, wood ash and food waste.
