Here are a few tips for getting sales tax exemption:
- The main way is if you're buying stuff for a legit business. You'd need to register your business as a corporation or LLC and get a tax ID number. Then you show merchants that number so you don't pay tax on items for the business.
- Some states also let you skip tax on certain things if you're low-income or disabled. You'd have to apply for a special exemption card from the state tax office. A bit of a hassle but can save you money.
- If you're a student, some stores will exempt you from tax with your valid student ID. Only works on campus or in certain college towns usually.
- Religious organizations can get tax-free status on purchases related to worship and nonprofit work. But you'd need official documentation from the church/temple/etc.
- Out-of-state purchases are sometimes tax-free depending on local laws. Certain online retailers won't charge tax if you're buying from another state.
- Medical items are usually tax-free with a doctor's note about what you need it for. Just like with religious exemptions, keep records in case you're audited.
Hope some of those ideas help! Tax exemption takes some paperwork but can add up in savings if you qualify for any of those. Let me know if any other questions!
